Cannot solve these questions

Can anybody show me the way how to do these, please:

If p and n are integers such that p>n> 0 and p(SQUARED) - n(squared) =12

Which of the following can be value of p-n

I. 1
II. 2
III. 4

A) I ONLY
B) II ONLY
C) I AND II ONLY
D) II AND III ONLY
C) I,II,III

When for the first time the United States imported more oil than it exported, Americans should have realized that an energy crisis "WAS IMMINENT AND COULD HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE":

A) was imminent and could happen in the future
B) could happen imminently in the future
C)will be imminent and happening soon
D) is an imminent thing
E) might be imminent ( correct)

Why? why not A or B?

Thank you :)!

I’m not home, so I can’t answer the rest on my phone, but for number 2, think about the meaning of imminent. Both A and B are obviously redundant. E is concise.

Check out this thread…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1154923-sat-math-question.html

You might want to try Google for your other questions as well…

For #1, I believe the answer is (b).

(p) squared minus (n) squared= 12 is similar to (p+n) (p-n) = 12.

If (p-n) is 1, then (p+n) would be 12.
If (p-n) is 2, then (p+n) would be 6.
If (p-n) is 4, then (p+n) would be 3.

To satisfy the requirements, p > n and both must be integers. For the first choice, to get (p+n)= 12, p needs to be 7 and n needs to be 5. This doesn’t fit (p-n)=1 so it’s eliminated.

For the second one, to get (p+n)= 6, you can use p=4, n=2. (p-n)= 2 in this case, so it works perfectly.

For the last one, to get (p+n)=3, you need p=2, n=1. In this case (p-n)=1 and not 4 so it doesn’t work.

This eliminates I and III and leaves II. There might be a shorter way to solve this though.

For number 1, I just went through the process of number substitution and trial & error. I kept trying numbers that had a difference of 1 and checked if their squares also had a difference of 12, same with II and III, until I arrived at the conclusion that only II is valid. If you have a calculator, the process should be over in less than 15 seconds. ClassicLay’s method works too, so go with whichever one you like.

For number 2, choice A is redundant, because “imminent” already means that something is near, therefore when you say that it is imminent and may happen soon, you’re being redundant. Choice B is wordy “happen imminently”, and there’s no reason to make the phrase convoluted. That leaves choice E, which is the shortest, simplest, and most concise. Always go for the simplest choice in sentence improvement questions (given that they’re grammatically correct.)

I’ll do some more later, if no one else picks off from where I left. Otherwise, try to Google some of the questions’ answers, you’d be surprised how many people have asked the same questions before.

is A. First thing you’ll notice is that you can immediately eliminate C, D, and E as answers, because the slope of the slope must be negative, since it’s pointing downwards. But how can you decide whether the slope is -2 or -1/2? The key to answering this is the abs p > abs r . Substitute p and r for x and y in the slope equation: y/x -> r/p . Since you know that r > p, r/p is greater than 1, so the answer must -2.

is D. Baseball’s refers back to Hank Aaron, not the story of him. If this sentence were to be corrected, it should be changed to ‘than of baseball’s’ - the of indicates that the story is Hank Aaron’s.

K is equal to 1.6. You set up a pair of equations: 16k = perimeter (p), where K is the length of each side and 16 is the number of sides included in the perimeter. The second equation is: area (a) = 10k^2; there are 10 squares and each one’s area is its side squared, or k^2. Knowing that p = a, you can combine the equations to read: 16k = 10k^2. Eliminate a k from both sides to get 16 = 10k, or k = 1.6.

is C. It was a difficult decision, but I’d feel more comfortable with a compound sentence (C) than a concessive clause (E) at the end of a sentence. This is the kind of problem I would agonize over on a test, haha.

Has to be D, but I’m not exactly sure what’s wrong. Just call it a gut feeling. I know it’s wrong, but I’m not exactly sure how to change it to make a right.

is A. To extend, as introduced earlier, doesn’t match up with warding off. Parallelism is necessary for compound gerunds. ‘To ward off’ or simply ‘ward off’ would be correct.

is C. ‘He’ and ‘him’ are too vague in this case, thought the context make it clear enough. To make this sentence more precise, ‘he’ should be changed to ‘the former’ and ‘him’ should be changed to ‘the latter’. Or just use either one’s name.

The answer is A. Error in idiom, and the correct form is “tendency to.” If you’d like to get a good basis in most idiom forms that appear on the SAT, feel free to view Silverturtle’s full SAT guide which should be found in this section. It contains a comprehensive review of everything related to SAT grammar, including idioms.

sorry but isn’t the answer to number 3 B?

That’s right, houstonr, the answer to 3 is B, not A. If |p| > |r|, and the slope of a line which passes through the origin is y/x, or in this case, r/p, therefore the slope must be a fraction since the nominator is less than the denominator. Also, the slope has to be negative because this is the second quadrant meaning that x is negative but y is positive. The only choice that satisfies these is choice B

Links were broken, I post them again. Thank you a lot for those that have been already solved.
