Applying to out of state university can be really stressful since the tuition for out of states students can be a killer. I am planning to apply for California Polytechnic-Pomona next yr but am beginning to change my mine. Since the finacial aid at most public university is not as strong as that of a private school, my out of state status might prevent me from going. Being from new york, I dont know what to do? I can try to declare state residency but that takes a yr. I probably wont be able to get a loan becuase my parents' credit score is bad. I do, however have very high SAT scores and GPA. SHould I just give up the idea of applying to out of state schools, since it will be even more expensive than a private school? With private schools, I can directly borrow from, but with an out of state public school, there is almost no chance they'll give it to me.

I really want to go to cal-pomona but if I cant pay, whats the point of applying? My sister is going to an out of state public school and she is in a loan hell, (first yr there and has already borrowed $25, 000).

i think there is a law where you can no longer declare in state residency to get your tuition fees reduced. I think you will be forced to pay out of state tuition all four years... sorry but i am pretty certain of this.

I definitely suggest applying, and then if you're accepted, assess the cost again at that point. I also would recommend applying to private schools, which are the same price in state or out of state. They tend to have larger endowments and can better meet all of your need. Many people I know, including myself, are spending less at private schools than we would have at our state school. Try to find some private schools of a similar caliber in CA if you really like that location.

As far as loans ago, I could be wrong... But you can definitely take them out in your own name, and at that point, I'm not sure if your parents' credit rating will be as big of an issue.

Don't forget--You say you have high SAT scores and a high GPA, so you may very well qualify for merit aid.

believe me if you have a good or even killer SAT Score and the stats to back it up you should definitely consider lookin at private schools. They will give good scholarships and in your case huge scholarships. Trust me as this is coming from an international student point of view. Most international students target private schools rather than publics because they know that financial aid is visibly limited at publics. Seeing that you are an out of state student you are sort of in the same league as intel students in the realm of financial aid. As such you should definitely persue going to a private.
