<p>it all started with me attending a college that that i wasnt able to afford. the moment i wasnt able to get a loan for the upcoming semester the finacial problems started. i dont know if i can blame it on me not having the correct advice or just me being immature trying to attend a college that was out of my reach to begin with. anyways learning from my mistakes i decided to attend a college that was much cheaper and wanted to make a fresh start. now am trying to get finacial aid but come to see that i can not get financial aid because i need my trascripts from my old college. i owe my old college money , which i am paying little by little and even though is not a huge amount that i owe them but with the economy how its and my wife expecting a little one on the way it will take me a minute to pay back. but how is it that because i can not afford to pay my old college to get my transcript am not able to get financial aid, i mean isnt this the point of financial aid to help with students that are having financial troubles. the admissions office understood my sittuation and accepted me, how is it that finacial aid wont understand that as of right now i cant afford to pay the entire amount in order to get my transcripts. they simply told me "sorry there's nothing i can do for you without you paying the other college and bringing the trasncripts ". please help i know there has to be a way for fin aid to help me without me having transcripts</p>
<p>You have to pay back the first college in order for them to release the transcripts.</p>
<p>Then, you can begin attending the second college.</p>
<p>Think of it this way, why should College B help you borrow money if they have hard evidence that you can’t pay it back?</p>
<p>Both your colleges are just behaving according to the rules under which they are required to operate. It isn’t a matter of being understanding or not… just that their hands are tied too.</p>
<p>If you say you only have a short time to pay it back, is there a way that you can contact the new college and see if you can defer your acceptance to perhaps the Spring semester to give you time to finish paying back the old college? Unless you think you can pay it all back by the end of next month, you might have to wait a few more months in order to get this settled. You’re in a difficult situation but I hope it works out for you!</p>

<p>You are in a bit of a financial pickle, but it seems reasonable that you need to pay back your old college before they need to send out transcripts. Put another way, far far far too many students would not bother to pay back outstanding bills at their last college if there wasn’t this ability to hold back transcripts. At least you are on track and should be able to with time pay it off and move on to your next college. I agree with the advice that you may have to try and defer your enrollment to straighten out (pay off) the old bills first. Good luck.</p>
<p>OP…my guess is you didn’t TELL your second college that you attended a FIRST college. HOWEVER getting federally funded aid, including a Stafford loan…probably in some HUGE data base someplace (that’s my guess). </p>
<p>Bottom line…you need to pay our debt to the first school. You owe them money and you can’t take another loan out without paying the first off. Those are the rules. </p>
<p>And you may as well get used to this policy…with banking being the way it is these days…getting MULTIPLE loans for the same purpose is going the way of the dinosaur (e.g. HELOC are less accessible than in the past).</p>
<p>well actually am not trying to get another loan am actually talking about getting grant money or some type of help and i understand that it is important to finish paying one thing in order to start another but the case here is that they dont want to accept my app without transcripts, i mean i dont mind my credits from my old college not being valued until i bring the transcipts, but the fin aid is what is going to help pay for the classes that i signed up for and to be honest with you guys i would have never enrolled for this semester if i would have known that i wasnt going to be able to get help i guess i would just take the advice and drop the classes or withdraw before it becomes too late. thanks everyone for the advice</p>

<p>Yes…that is correct. They will NOT accept your application without your transcript from your previous school. And the previous school will not release that until your bill is paid in full. </p>
<p>So…if you want to apply to the second school, you will have to get your transcript…and therefore, you need to pay your bill!!!</p>
<p>Just curious, how did you manage to enroll in classes if they haven’t accepted your application? Is this an open enrollment school? If you need FA, I think you’re going to have to postpone your coursework until you take care of the previous bill. If the balance is small enough to be manageable in monthly payments - ie. in the hundreds, not thousand - you could see if the old school will accept a credit card, if you have one.</p>
<p>I know someone that is in the same situation. They after decided to take a break from a major university to take online classes from another school, this happened. He took some classes, but before completing the year, he decided to move back home and was accepted into another good college, but the online school made the move of paying for the classes that the aid would have no longer covered (the school must have witheld financial aid until the end of two quarters b/c they gave him two refund checks). Now the online school is saying that he owes them money and they will not release his transcrips w/o full payment (around $3000). The good thing is that he CAN completely ignore them since he was already accepted into the school at home around the time this started happening. The only hold back is the fact that he has moved and wants to complete his degree elsewhere. At the end of the day, he still doesnt have to pay the school back right now if he doesn’t want to.</p>
