What happens if I can't attend CalSO? I know they have a mid-July online class registration thing, but does that mean that mean I get lower priority / 2nd dibs on classes, especially ones that might be packed full? my friends are freaking me out about not being able to get core classes mid-July, and i just wanted some confirmation about that. thanks!! BTW, i'm in EECS, if that matters.

Yes, if you don't go to CalSO then you are one of the last people to sign up for classes during Phase I. All of the upperclassmen have already gone as have all of the entering freshman going to CalSO. Your Phase II appointment is assigned already though.

How necessary is it for us to attend CalSO? I live in SoCal (hey, its CalSO reversed! geez, im retarded) and can't afford to fly to Berkeley for two days and then pay 200 bucks for CalSO. Do a lot of freshmen go to CalSO? Is it really that bad to not be able to register first. btw, I'm in L&S probably doing psych prerequisites.

Most freshman go to CalSO, in fact most of the dates are filled up.

Not going to CalSO only affects you picking up to 10.5 units of classes allowed during Phase I. Some classes will fill up quickly during Phase I, others don't. It depends on the particular class and the professor teaching it.

I thought there was a cal-so like program down in so cal, but I could be wrong.

It certainly isn't necessary, but you have to tell them on that online form that you're not going. You will get the last (worst) telebears appointment for picking out classes in phase 1. And yes, most students do go. It is really helpful, they show you around, introduce you to the different services...etc. It just makes life a bit easier when you first get here, but you can skip it if you need to.

If you are going alone from OOS, are you stuck getting from the airport to campus on your own?

I guess I need to sign up.

most of the dates are filled up? i just checked and all the dates are open for me. anyways, my friend told me that he was able to attend the CalSO in SoCal and i am wondering if anyone else was made that offer to attend the SoCal one instead of the one at berkeley. who qualifies to attend the SoCal and NorCal ones?

What I meant to say is that all of the CalSO dates will fill up before they begin, therefore those who don't attend will go dead last in picking their first 10.5 units of classes.

it's easy to get from Oakland Airport... take the shuttle bus from the terminal to the Bart station, then take the Richmond Bart to the Shattuck stop in Berkeley. The campus is about a 10 minute walk from there.

^I figured I'd have to fly to Oakland, which is cool since I'm flying from a Southwest Airlines Hub... but it turns out I can't make it from Cal back to Florida on Saturday after CalSO... so I'm stuck flying to LAX and having my family come along for a vacation...

Anyway, we'll be staying at the Clift in SF... does anyone have an (realistic) idea of how long of a drive it is in rush hour from Union Square to Berkeley? My parents insist on having a car and ditching me at Cal, which is perfect for me, heh... but I need to make sure we leave early enough.

I'm really excited for it... I'm going on 6/22.

umm...if your coming in the morning, from SF to Berkeley, traffic off the bay bridge wont be terrible, certainly not as bad if you went from Berkeley to SF. Of course, random crap happens, and you could get in a jam. Leave and hour and half or so early, then, if traffic wasn't bad, go get coffee or something in the morning.

Actually, nowthat I think of it, i believe you're suppose to get to cal at what...7 am ish? Therefore, traffic from SF to Cal will be even lighter, so you could pretty safely leave an hour or less. Not to mention a ton of people always get there late, so it won't be a big deal.

what is CalSo and when is it? what's it good for? i'm confuzed...

^^Thanks smallz.

I'll leave the hotel by 7 at the latest, I guess. I'm not a morning person, so I've got to get up and got coffee in my system, heh. Thanks for the heads up on traffic.

Uh, does anyone have any info on the SoCal calSO (if there is any)? I only got an invitation to the alumni thing in OC and the reception thing in LA.

it looks like i won't be able to attend either.

people who attend get first priority for choosing classes? can someone clarify this?

i'm worried that i won't get the classes/class times i want. ):

Yes, if you don't go to CalSO you WILL pick classes last along with everyone else that didn't show up. All the upperclassmen have already picked in Phase I as have all those freshman who did show up at CalSO. However, your Phase II appointment to pick the remainder of classes is pre-assigned.

what is Phase II appointment time based on for incoming freshman?

when is the first CalSO date?

!!! Can I start picking out courses right after i send my " i cannot attend CalSO " form. If not when is the time to start picking out during phase 1 , I am an EECS major.

My DS is sure he wants to attend Berkeley (he’s a math major) but I told him we needed to see the school first - we’re in SoCal - so we’re attending Cal Day. Now, after reading the post re CalSo, I’m worried that he won’t be able to sign up for one of the earlier Calso events since he’ll be sending his SIR the last week of April. Will classes be filled up for the later CalSo’s?
