Hello. I’m stuck in a dilemma between picking one of two degrees–English with a focus on creative writing OR computer science with a focus on information assurance. I’ve done my research and many suggest that one should pick the more marketable major, which in this case would be computer science, and then writing in your spare time as a hobby. However, to be honest, I don’t think coding or math is for me. I have no issues with sitting down and reading or writing all day, but when it comes to coding, solving math problems, or memorizing networking topologies, it is a boring nuisance that makes me want to give up immediately.
Also, I wouldn’t be attending a high ranked university for either major, it would just be some mediocre online university ranked top 500 in the country (National University, which is a Californian brick and mortar school that offers online majors). As for what type of work I would be interested in post-graduation, it would be something along the lines of freelance writing, copy editing, book editing, technical writing, or article/blog writing. I by no means intend to become a teacher. And I don’t need to make a lot of money, I’d be happy with making even $1,200 / month freelance writing while perhaps working a part time job, so if that would be possible with an English degree, then I would be more than happy to pursue one.
So, I have a couple of questions:
(1) Which major do I pick and why?
(2) Does the university’s ranking matter at all?
Thank you.
