Can't decide on a Major

Hi I'm new, and I don't know if this is the right section to post this but please tell me if I'm in the wrong section.
Anyways,
I'm having a bit of trouble on deciding what I want to major in but let me make it clear that I know what I want to do; I want to get a career as an artist in the entertainment industry. I researched on what things I should do and this is what I got from what I read and what most of the professionals tell me:degrees in art and design are virtually useless, only your portfolio matters and unless you can get a scholarship to an actual serious art school like art center, you are better off studying from books on your own; and I've taken some art and design classes already, the 3d animation classes are pointless; why take a 6 week course on something you can learn in a few days? The only art classes you really need are life drawing classes, because you don't have someone to pose nude for you.

So because of the ****astic economy, I'm going to major in something else for a back up plan; and this is where I'm having trouble. I first decided maybe I should go straight into a trade, but most trades I found requires doing a lot of math with is where I struggle a bit at. I then have thought of some sort of medical technician or a nurse degree, but I heard recently a lot of 2-year medical degree students can't find a job and are getting laid off. I then look at psychology, I was quite interested in it for a while but I heard it is no use without a PHD. Then I have thought of English degree because I kinda like it and several of my english teachers told me I have some gifts in narrative and creative writing, but people keep telling me it is useless; you are only taking English if you are a foreigner who needs to know how to speak English or you are planning to become a lawyer or a teacher. But then again, people say it doesn't matter what you major in; you may never do anything with it.

So now I'm completely lost and confused, I keep going back and forth like a yo-you on what to do, help?

Have you ruled out Business? Writers can succeed in that major and artistic creativity is a great bonus. Think Advertising or Marketing.

A minor in Graphic Design would be very useful, and may even give you a way to continue your artistic interests at school.

Good luck.

Something with math

I have thought of business marketing, but I thought it is something anybody can learn along their way in their career.

^^Math is your friend

With that kind of thinking, virtually /everything/ is something that can be learned along a career.

Math isn’t needed in most business jobs or even most jobs in general. Coding, web design, graphic design, marketing, multimedia and knowing your market are over half the business jobs out there, especially in a low economy! Learn to sink or swim and entrepreneur yourself and your skills. People who think employers don’t like English majors or good writers in general in the business world are ignorant idiots!

If you want a 2 year medical degree as a back up do a Radiological or Phlebotomy Technician program!

Then why are there so many business majors?

The key is that if you want to start a career in business, you need to have a degree in business. Sure, some superstar might invent the next velcro in his basement and turn it into a gazillion dollar empire. But, the people who work at the empire need to have the degrees. Good, stable, growing companies that help you learn along your career need to see that you’re willing to commit to education first.

Look into Journalism if you’re interested in English but want it to be more practical.

Journalism has gone the way of the doodoo. Technical Writers are what many employers want and is totally overlooked.
