Can't decide! (UW vs Purdue vs SCU vs Gonzaga vs UBC)

So the college decision deadline is rapidly approaching and I’m having a lot of trouble selecting a college. I’ve crossed two off my list but still definitely need to narrow down my choices. I’ve visited each school and liked each one. I’m planning on majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Each school has its pros and cons which is why I’m struggling so much to pick one. I’d greatly appreciate any insight into any of these schools. Thanks!

Purdue:

pros
-amazing engineering program
-FYE gives the chance to experience all the engineering majors before picking one
-Study Abroad designed for engineering majors
-Basketball team (& school spirit?)
-# of clubs
-internship and co-op opportunities
-job fairs
-companies want to hire purdue grads
-food

cons
-location… Very far from home and located in a boring small town
-tuition cost
-rather large school
-don’t know anyone attending

Santa Clara

pros
-great engineering program
-Silicon Valley!
-direct admit to ME
-smaller school
-food

cons
-too small?
-very expensive tuition
-lacking in diversity
-not much school spirit
-no study abroad program for the country I’d like to visit
-might be difficult to change majors

Gonzaga

pros
-amazing community
-great athletics
-really friendly people
-study abroad program
-huge tuition scholarship
-direct admit to ME

cons
-engineering program isn’t very well-known
-rather small
-Spokane is meh
-very lacking in diversity
-academics are decent from what I’ve heard

University of Washington

(used to be my dream school until I realized some of the cons)

pros
-great engineering program
-lots of classes, clubs, activities, etc.
-amazing location and very close to my family
-athletics
-school spirit
-dorms
-in state tuition
-very diverse

cons
-very difficult to get into engineering or CS majors
-very large school
-might be difficult to make friends since it’s so huge
-dorms, cafeteria, gym, etc. are spread out and take a while to walk to
-class sizes are huge
-research university so professors don’t prioritize students

University of British Columbia

pros
-Vancouver, only three hours from home
-good engineering program from what I’ve heard
-lots of classes, activities, etc.
-study abroad programs
-very diverse
-inexpensive tuition

cons
-engineering school isn’t super well known
-the process of getting a study permit, adjusting to a new country, etc
-dorms are only guaranteed freshman year, very difficult to get one after that. Apartment prices are crazy expensive
-different curriculum
-VERY large school
-AP chem wasn’t offered at my school and UBC prefers engineering students to have taken that
-apply to major after first year (?)
-whole process of applying was a bit confusing tbh

Net price at each, and how much can you actually afford (without more loans than the federal direct loan limit – $5,500 the first year)?

Purdue admits engineering students to a first year pre-engineering program; students have to apply based on GPA to get into their majors:

If you are not directly admitted to your engineering major at Washington, you will have a competitive admission process to get into your major:

Looks like UBC also has competitive admission to your major:

@ucbalumnus

I can afford them all but am still reluctant to pay Purdue and Santa Clara’s huge tuitions.

Is Gonzaga one of your less expensive options, with direct admission to your major? If so, those would be strong points in its favor. All of your other schools are expensive and/or have a secondary admission process to get into your major.

symph0nica, did you make your decision yet?
