I have a chance to go on a mission trip to Idaho (doesn’t sound too exciting) to do community service on an Indian reservation with my friend’s church this summer. I’m totally not religious, but this trip sounds like it could be kinda fun. Basically, like the selfish person I am, I’m wondering if it is worth it in terms of looking good on my college application. Any input?

please respond- i need to decide by tomorrow morning

My son did something similar and had an amazing experience. He did it reluctantly at first but then loved it, met some great friends, and learned a lot about himself. He actually had his first leadership opportunity there it was his sophomore summer and learned a lot about being a leader. He wrote an essay on it for college. You may decide to go for college but I can guarantee you will be glad for many other reasons that you went.

go for it. im sure it will be an interesting add on for your college applications, but it might also be a very worthwhile experience, something you could look back on and appreciate as more than just an application boost.

good luck, and have a good time.

I know I would have a good experience and all that jazz, but I'm pretty busy ,so from a college standpoint (b/c college pretty much consumes my mind these days) I just don't know its worth

If you think you'll like it and you'll take the opportunity seriously, then I vote yes, you'll become a better person, more compassionate, and more knowledgeable about Indians, history, and poverty, as well as perhaps being able to write better college essays. But is there a chance that you as a nonreligious person will feel significantly uncomfortable on a mission trip?

well...if you already have a fair amount of EC's and volunteer work to add on your applications, then don't feel like you desperately need another activity to throw on there just for kicks. no matter how much impressive 'stuff' you have to offer a college, an applicant will always be stressing about more-more-more! haha, its the way it goes sometimes. if you honestly feel that you're too busy to take the time to take a trip like this right now, then just do what makes you comfortable.

My friend's church is Episcopal (SP?) and it is pretty relaxed and liberal. My friend assures me I won't feel uncomfortable b/c its not really a religious trip and alot of people go who aren't religious. I guess I'll just have to grin and bear it through all the religious talk.

it would be great to be exposed to different cultures and religions. ya know, i think a little part of you really wants to go, or else you wouldn't be torn. go for it, and have a wonderful time!

If college "consumes your mind" then a trip like the one you are considering could be an especially great thing for you. The trip may help put college into perspective. When you see and feel how some others live, you'll perhaps begin to see too that college needn't be and shouldn't be all-consuming.

There will be a good college for you.

if you're not even religious, why go?

Well even though I'm not religious, I'm still a good person (I hope) and would like to do some kind of community service outside my community
