When I try to enroll in CS170 (my phase 2 was today), I get a "The category for which your enrollment goes under is full" or something similar to that and I've forced to only waitlist the class. When I checked the enrollment it says:

Seats have been reserved for:

Students with a major of Computer Science or Engineering - Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences or Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Students with a class level of Senior (Full)
Students with a major of Computer Science or Engineering - Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences or Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Students with a class level of Junior or Sophomore or Freshman (Open)
Students with a major of Applied Mathematics (Open)
Open seating (Open)

As I've mentioned before, I'm actually a junior with senior status (which I feel applies to most EECS students anyway). Why doesn't the Open seating kick in and allow me to enroll. This feels like a bug in the system imo. I really want to get the CS170 class. What should I do? :(

Also I've had senior status since my sophomore year and this was never an issue before.

^I’m not sure who to email. I tried the professor and he said he can’t do anything and CCed my email to someone who he says maybe be able to help. Then he also said that I should speak to peer advisors first. Who are they?

Peer advisors are undergrads who either volunteer or are paid to advise fellow students. I don’t know why your professor would direct you to them, actually – I doubt they have power over telebears, though they might have explanations as to why this is happening and have actually useful solutions.

Personally, I’d try contacting the staff advisors instead. They’re the ones who set seat reservations for classes.

^Thanks for the link, I’m definitely emailing them!

btw, am I the only one running into this issue? I’d feel a lot better if this was happening to others too when enrolling for upper div CS classes

Enrollment in upper div COMPSCI courses is prioritized for seniors in CS
and EECS. That means that during phase I only (a limited number) of
CS/EECS seniors are allowed to enroll directly into the class and
everyone else is given the option of placing themselves on the waitlist.

As GSI hires are confirmed and we become certain that we can support a
larger class, we allow more students in – starting with CS/EECS
seniors. After all (or almost all) CS/EECS seniors have been
accommodated, we begin to enroll other students from the waitlist –
starting with remaining cs/eecs students without senior standing who are
waitlisted for an open discussion section.

As an EECS senior (in the world of telebears) you have a good chance but
you should also be thinking of backup plans in case your first choice of
CS upper div classes are too impacted.

Eh, it always seems that in the end almost everyone gets in (with the exception of a few very popular classes such as 188 ). In particular, 170 in recent history has gotten everyone in.
