Can't find an internship, applied to more than 40 companies

EE student here, i’ve sent my resume to literally 45+ companies and none have called me back

Where did you intern? Are you a citizen of the US?

I’m currently looking for an internship and I’m having trouble finding one, I’ve never interned before this would be my first one and yes I am citizen of the US

You need to go through your career services office at your school if you have never interned before.

Unfortunately, the online websites look for buzz terms so you have to copy a job announcement and use their terms in your resume and in the online app. Also, the big companies have “student” links but, those links only give you info about the next student on-campus “job fair”. Good Luck!

^^ Good point.
Are you a rising sophomore, Junior? Depends on whether your GPA is competitive, whether you have taken relevant coursework, labs & done many class projects etc.Sometimes co-ops may be a better pathway, if those opportunities are available at your College.
Did you apply to internship postings on your university career center or in response to the ones on general public forums such as Monster, Indeed etc?
What do you think are some of the reasons for not getting a response? Have you had your resume critiqued by professionals at your University’s career center, continue to use their assistance in finding summer work? Some portion of your tuition $$ are being used to pay the career resource center folks to help students like you. How effective do you think are those folks, and your interaction with them so far? Also it helps if you have done some informal (rudimentary) gap analysis of the skills what the employers may be seeking and your level of knowledge and capabilities.

I’m doing a co-op/internship program at my school and i’ve also applied to their selected job board. my gpa is lacking though it’s a 2.75. My resume’s been critiqued by many and I’ve done quite a few practice interviews,

“I’ve never interned before this would be my first one”
“I’m doing a co-op/internship program at my school”

Not sure what is the real issue.

Your GPA could be a problem. Try to raise it next year to at least 3.0.

Are you looking for paid internship?

Did you identify companies that are actively seeking interns?

Yes I’m looking for a paid internship in fact that’s the only ones offered around my area, and a lot of the companies i i sent out my application too were actively seeking interns

When you think of how many companies didn’t pursue it with you, I think you should only count the ones that clearly were interested in having an intern. So if that was, for instance, 12, you should think 12 applications were unsuccessful.

A key thing to know is what the supply of would-be interns to demand for them is in your area. There may be simply too many applicants for the internships. If that’s the case, a likely way to deal with it is to accept the inconveniences of interning elsewhere, find out what places the market is better, and apply in those places.

Your cover letter and/or resume may be in some way weak, discouraging or indicative of your not being as qualified as others.

Put an email address in your application, and of course use a phone on which a message can be left if the phone is in use.

Mine didn’t have good luck online either. But she found work from HR who came to her college. They were looking for people.

Depending on your area, you could look in the craigslist under Arch/Engineering. Also depending on your area Zip recruiter is a meta search engine so looks all over. The big ads are for big companies who can afford to pay the price to advertise. It cost $400 to advertise in Monster for a month.

You want smaller companies who are going to advertise in less expensive sites. It only costs $25 to post in the craigslist. It all depends on where you live what kind of ads are in these secondary type places.

@Lakemom Where would you say is the best place to search for work in these smaller companies?

The craigslist is one. Depending on where u live the ads may be good or not. Local small company’s advertise there. Look in arch/engineering or tech jobs or even customer service which may have a job that involves an area of engineering.

Where I live, Zip recruiter has some ads of smaller places. Internship.com and internmatch.com may have some ads in your areas.

Plan to spend 20-30 min each day looking through the new ads that get posted so you can respond as soon as they come out.

Large companies use Monster, Indeed and Simply hired.

If you don’t have a linkedin profile you should start one. It’s free, make sure to put in a photo of yourself. Sometimes recruiters contact you to see if you want their help. Connect with others on linkedin just like friends on FB but Linkedin is for professional connections not what you ate for lunch. The more connections you have the more it will suggest others you may know and through that you may find someone who will hire you.

There is a feature on linkedin advanced search whether you can put in your school and the field of work you are looking for and location and see all the people who graduated from your school in your major. You can contact those alumni saying you are going to their alma mater and ask if they might need a intern this summer.

Internship.com and internship match.com are the web sites my daughter looked at. It direct you to look at the companies website.

Actually, you upload your resume to internship.com or intern match.com and can apply to many internship ads thru the site directly. It is a good idea however to google the company to see what they are about.
