Can't find much information about SDSU music program.

My daughter applied to some top tier music programs and got into all that she auditioned for. She also applied to SDSU at at my insistence an was also admitted there. I love visiting San Diego and would be able to see her perform there, so I want her to consider it seriously, but when she compares it to Berklee and Miami she starts complaining about it’s ranking and industry success. Even with some substantial scholarships at the private schools SDSU would cost almost half of the others, and is something we could actually afford. If anyone has some input which I could use in my discussions with her I would greatly appreciate it.

You should post this in the Music Major forum. Maybe there is a reason why you can’t find much info on their music major.

@kelvinjjjj - I’m an Aztec parent - I don’t know a lot about the music program, but I do know that they are a very active program not only on campus but in the greater community. Last night, they had a huge concert at the Copley Symphony Hall in downtown San Diego. Have you visited their Facebook page? There’s lots of information there. Has she visited the campus, and talked with seniors/grad students? My kids did this for their majors when they visited the campus, and really got a ton of insight into the programs by talking with the students and faculty.

@Fish125 We have been there a few times, and we saw an excellent concert at a church off campus last month. I don’t know enough to judge how good they really are, but it sounded great to me. We talked to some students and faculty, but didn’t get the feeling that graduates were leaving and finding work in the music industry, more like they were good kids using music to get a good education. On the other hand Berklee had an impressive event today that gave you the impression that their graduates were the most prepared in the world to join a musical workforce. One kid we met today was from San Diego and he said he never considered applying to SDSU, and another said he was in a similar situation as our own with admission to both.

@kelvinjjjj - Re: the San Diego kid who never considered applying to SDSU - Though a percentage of our local kids want to stay in San Diego and attend one of our universities, a great many of them apply elsewhere because they want a non-San Diego college experience. My kids were all across the spectrum on this, too! I think it would be very hard to turn down one of those two other options your child has. They are amazing institutions for music from what I hear. Congratulations to your family!!

@fish125 Thanks, It’s all a matter of $$$ now.

For anyone that cares, she got into three schools that I thought were reaches based on her grades and tests scores(Miami, Syracuse, San Diego State) I guess I spent too much time looking at admissions scattergrams, because they don’t seem to matter much to music programs when auditions are involved.
