i have to work part time, and the only days and times i am available for an internship are in the afternoons (after 4PM putting in time for transportation after class) and on Fridays, because of work. I'm a senior, and have to take these courses to finish, and I also can't not work, because I need money. But unfortunately, the field of work I'm in right now isn't what I want in the long term... though it does pay pretty well.. compared to an internship with no pay. And the kind of internship I want usually gives no pay because of the high competition (production internships, writing, etc.). And the times I can do are really inconvenient for them. I've done internships before... and frankly, I don't learn much. I rather dislike them. But I want to do them because it's "expected" of me... but since it's difficult for me to do them anyway, will it hurt me that much more in the long run? The only positive thing I can see from an internship is to develop connections, and network, etc. But honestly, I haven't even kept in touch with anyone from my past internships, and I don't feel like they can really help me that much. I was planning on just getting a starter position to the kind of companies I want to work for after college, and work my way up... instead of getting an internship with no pay right now.. though the first plan will probably take me a bit longer... well... that sounds like the only thing I can do now anyway.

What is it you want to do as a career?

honestly, i want to be a screenwriter. but i’m not too far along, and i’m going to need a regular job soon. and as for that, i don’t really know what else i want to do. that may also be why internships wouldn’t be too helpful for me.. because i wouldn’t plan to work with them in the long term either. but i don’t want to fall into the stereotypical aspiring writing path and take up jobs like waitressing, in hopes of not being stuck there in the long term in case writing doesn’t work out.

What about getting experience by working on the college newspaper? Another option might be to volunteer at the college’s Writing Center?
