Can't get aninterview -- Chances?

My daughter missed an interview with an adcom member who came to town because she was ill. She rescheduled as a telephone interview two weeks later but canceled that one because she was still ill with mono. She's been emailing and calling off-and-on for 6 weeks, trying to reschedule a telephone interview. She can't seem to get a response. This school is one of her top choices. Should she assume that it's "gone" and move on?

Did your D call the admissions office a few days before the first interview was scheduled, and did she notify the college about having mono (the first-time), as well? The college might be non-commital if your D cannot make the times the college has available for phone interviews.

To be able to anwer the question depends on how the first call happened. And, when the explainations and/or contacts were made, before an answer or opinion can be made about this situation. Just remember, however, that someone who keeps rescheduling an interview, or not liking the times a phone interview takes place is in danger of looking unreliable, or uninterested. My suggestion, if they have given another chance to do the interview thing is to be accomidating, even if it means a 6 am interview.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps. Let me know the circumstances, and I can better answer your question.

Blaineko, thanks for responding. The original interview was scheduled at a hotel when the adcom person was in town. My daughter called the same day to cancel because she was ill but asked if she could do a phone interview instead. The interviewer said that it would not work for that evening but to reschedule for the following week, which my daughter did. The interviewer called at the appointed time and my daughter answered the phone. My daughter had strep at the time (didn't know it was mono yet) and told the interviewer that she still was sick and would call her the next week. My daughter has been calling and emailing about every 2 weeks since with no response. What do you think?

My suggestion would be to see if she gets word by email. Since an interview at most schools is optional, I would forget about the interview, if the person interviewing her does not get back to her. Since it is the start of crunch time, the interviewer might not have had time to check her/his email, due to travel. Sometimes secretaries just flag email for interviewers and admissions officers.

I would suggest concentrating on the the apps for now. In the meanwhile, have your D send a note to the interviewer apologizing for being unable to interview because of Mono. Have her restate that it is her first choice school, and that she is looking forward to hearing from them. They will more likely take that into consideration (and will be reminded in writing), rather than a vague notion as to why your D did not complete the two scheduled interviews. It is too important to have a vague recollection deturmine your D's future at the school. Writing a personal note looks thoughtful, while multiple emails might be taken in a negative light.

It should be okay, as it is in the college's court, so to speak. Again, just my 2 cents. Hope this helps. :)
