Ok, so my sons block schedule --2 classes he already has credit for. Obviously he dropped them. But he has so much general ed done to APs and community college credit, that he really doesnt have any options…He is waitlisted (kinda big numbers) and I am wondering if its acceptable or allowable to have 2 community college classes while enrolled so he can stay on track? I have looked in the Cal Poly book and it says "matriculated CSU student may enroll on a space available basis for course per term at another college etc…He is registered already for one class somewhere else. But when I called admissions and asked today they said why not? They say kids go home at summer and enroll in their hometown…which is how I see it .But who knows if I got someone that really doesnt know the specifics? My son wants to enroll in one other class at community college so he would be sure he has 4 classes but is afraid after all is said and done, they might not give him credit for it since it would total two classes at another college while concurrecltly enrolled… Are there any current students here that know this answer?

My other thought is he needs to have enough units at CP to be considered full time doesn’t he? Would that still workout?

Does he have to be considered full time? Right now he has 9 CalPoly units but if he should get at least one of the wait listed classes he would definitely be considered a full time student. Does full time student vs part time student make a difference in the cal poly world?

Last year my son (Materials Engineering) took an engineering class at Cuesta Community College in SLO during the Fall semester. It works better in the Fall than in the Spring because Cuesta is on semesters, while CP is on quarters. Cal Poly changes from Winter to Spring quarter in late March which is in the middle of Cuesta’s Spring semester. This can make dual enrollment in Spring more complicated because a student’s Spring CP schedule may not work out with the Cuesta schedule that was working fine during Winter quarter. Cuesta’s Fall semester probably starts in the next week or so, so if he were to take a class there this Fall (that was not an online course) he would need to be in SLO very soon which could be a problem if he doesn’t have housing unitl mid September. Both schools start Winter break at approximately the same time, so if a student is in SLO by late August, it can work out pretty well.

I don’t think there is an issue with CP if the student has fewer than 12 units, but you should probably make sure. You might want to consider that $2100 is a lot of tuition to pay for just 9 units (I don’t know, but maybe there is a reduced tuition price for fewer that 12 units). Cuesta’s tuition is cheap, so no worries there.

If he does take any CC courses, be sure to check Assist.org for articulation agreements with Cal Poly. Good Luck!

Cuesta started today.

Correction. Cuesta started yesterday.

We live in the area so thats not a problem…His class already registered is Cuesta and his class doesnt start until 9-10-10 …He was thinking of one more at Hancock- which the class wont start for another two weeks…and there is room in the class!

I hope everything works out for your son. I guess I would feel that attending the local CC and Cal Poly would be too much for a freshmen, but since you live in the area and your son has already taken cc courses, he may be fine. I think the cc courses at Cuesta are a good option for kids later in the year or future years. It just is frustrating that your son can’t get classes at cal poly after getting in! I hope he finds the classes he needs.
