Can't get in, what to do?

My family and I drove to NEU yesterday to take some tours and talk to admissions, and I got some very bad news. I will most likely be declined from transferring into NEU's Architecture program, not because of my grades, but because I do not have all the required pre-requisite courses. One admissions adviser was very positive, she said that every year is different and no case is ever handled the same, but lets be honest here. I feel pretty stupid because the courses were listed on the Architecture transfer page in their website, staring me right in the face. I currently go to SUNY Delhi for Architecture and I will be getting my Associates in Applied Sciences this May. The Architecture program there is garbage, the professors are horrible and the studios where we are supposed to be completing all our work are easily out done by any 5th grade art classroom. None of my design courses from Delhi will transfer over to NEU, but that is not even half the problem. The courses I am missing to be considered for admission are Physics II, Calculus II, English II, and a Natural Science course. Why have I not taken any of these at Delhi already? Because that stupid school bunches all of their Architecture and Construction students into one joint program during the first 2 years, so while I could have been taking courses that actually help an architect, I was learning how to mix concrete and how to sweat copper. While not completely useless activities, I would have been much better off at another school, something I failed to realize as a freshman. So I can't get in, what do I do?

my best option is to take these missing courses at nearby Dutchess Community College, but that means a year of taking only 4-5 courses that aren't even guaranteed to transfer. I have to wait a year because even if I knock out all these courses in the fall. NEU won't accept spring architecture transfers. Should I really devote a year, basically taking a break from all design work and focus on taking credits for only 1 school? I would definitely do this If I can be guaranteed a spot at NEU, but nothing about transferring schools is definite. Yeah, I am being real negative right now, but if I do this and still don't get in. Then that's 3 years of school that wont get me to where I need to be. Then there's having to pay for it all, If I get in for fall 2010 and realize NEU wont give me enough aide, as I've been reading is a common problem, I am definitely screwed over. I'm in a real tough spot here people, any advice means a lot to me. Thanks

A year ago, I applied to Northeastern as an architect major but I was denied. So, I began looking into the prerequisites. I noticed that for architecture, it says Required instead of Preferred. Anyway, I attended my safety college and began hearing about how much work an architect major has to do so I decided to change it to Civil Engineering. I choose that because I looked at the transfer equivalency and most credits would transfer over. So, I applied to Northeastern as a Transfer for Biochemistry and I got in this year. Their architecture program seems fairly difficult to get into.

My advice is if you definitely want to become an architect, then you should stay at your current school. But if you decide to change your major and you really want to go to Northeastern, then you should apply.

thanks for the comment, what school did you try and transfer from? what pre-req courses where you missing? As for the work I am used to it, I have already been spending 30+ hours a week on major projects in the lab outside of class, I just wish it was at a better facility.

I have thought about changing majors in the past but I always seem to realize that I should stay in Architecture. From what I’ve been told, getting a job after college is very competitive in this field and I think going to a good school will give me a much better chance then my current school. Like I said SUNY Delhis program isnt that great, theres only two professors and I already can’t stand one of them. Their bachelors program just opened in 2006 so I dont want to be one of their guinea pigs to see if it is successful in entering a masters program or not.

I have already decided I am not going back to Delhi, so I will most likely be going to community college until I can find another school. If I have the pre-req courses I dont see why I cant go to NEU. The admissions advisor said my grades make me a very strong canidate, I just dont have the courses. I will be looking at other schools while in community college, but I will always want to attend NEU.

If you can afford it, maybe NEU would let you take their summer courses to satisfy the requirements, with transfer approval contingent on satisfactory completion.

I wont be able to do that either. I live about 3 and half hours from the school and I do not have the funds to live there for the summer and pay for classes. I’m really praying I get in despite the requirements, but I know its not going to happen…
