Can't get into sjsu c.s./software engineering

Hello. I am currently a freshman at sjsu(second semester) and undeclared at the moment. I had a GPA of 3.0 first semester due to my C in PDE calc and another elective. Right now, I’m on track for another 3.0 because I’m projecting B’s in every class. I know I won’t get into sjsu’s c.s. program because my GPA isn’t high enough. Any opinions on what I should do? I really want to major in cs and can’t really raise my GPA to a 3.6(requirement for cs transfers), so I’m confused on what to do. Please help.

Did you originally apply for CS as a Freshman applicant? Were you accepted as Undeclared? What is SE’s GPA cutoff to change majors or Computer Engineering? Have you discussed your options with an academic advisor?

I applied as a math major and quickly realized I wanted to do cs or even software engineering. SE’s cutoff is 3.6 I believe, but I could be off by a small margin. And yes I have and we discussed an alternative to cs ( a branch of mathematics). What happens to students who dont meet the GPA requirements needed to switch to cs?

If you do not meet the requirements to switch into CS, you have 2 choices:

  1. Consider an alternate major at SJSU that you can qualify for with your GPA OR
  2. Consider transferring out of SJSU to a school that would accept into the CS major.

Alright thanks. I can’t find any information on what requirements I need to transfer from one CSU to another.

For example, the number of units I need to have completed, or the GPA I must have to be admitted into the school.

You need minimum 60 semester units by the Spring semester prior to transfer to a CSU. You would need to check each CSU to see the transfer requirements. Since most transfers are community college transfers, you can use assist.org as a guideline. Since assist.org does not have CSU to CSU transfer requirements, you could use it to try and match your current SJSU courses to your transfer target CSU. CSU GE’s should all be transferable, so you would then just try to match up the major requirements. Your SJSU advisor should be able to help you along with contacting any target CSU advisors.

Each CSU will give priority to local transfer applicants and many are very difficult to get into if you are not local (SLO and SDSU).

Looks like SJSU SE admits major changers with the GPA used for transfer applicants. Most recently, this was 3.30 with four course requirements completed.

Okay. Didn’t see that. Thanks! I’ll try and get it up this semester.
