Can't go ED anymore

So basically I was accepted EA to my state school and ED to another school (decisions came out at the same time). When i got my estimated financial aid package I thought I was going to able to afford it so I went ahead and put the deposit and signed that I would go. But after my dad was doing his 13' taxes last week he straight up told me that there is no way I can go to my ED school anymore because we have no money lol...

Can I still back out of the ED agreement and go to my state school I already got into? I know I made a mistake and all so I don't need the ethical lectures from everyone... I am just curious if I can legally still back out.

Thanks

Re-read the ED agreement. There may be an explicit out if it is unaffordable / not enough financial aid.

Of course you can legally back out. Ed is not a legally binding contract. they won’t sue you or anything.

Have you gotten a FA package from the ED school yet? If so, you probably have pretty strong grounds for an appeal, if your financial situation really has changed drastically. Call the school’s FA office and ask if they will change your package. Clearly say that you will not be able to afford the school if they don’t offer more money.

Yes, you can back out of ED. Also, it’s not considered a breach of ED in the slightest if you go to your state university.

Just let them know asap, as they are right in the thick of making RD choices.

Good luck. Better to go state than to get too far in debt.

Before you back out and withdraw, work with the ED schools financial aid office and see if you can appeal your aid package. If there was a a drastic change in say your parents income, then it could be likely you’ll get more money.
