Hi, I'm an incoming first year at UChicago thinking about his course prospects.

As it stands right now I am very interested in Econ/CS/Math/Stats and I was looking at the possible combinations.

I do have a couple questions regarding the major and minor possibilities.

1) According to the requirements of the Statistics major, one MUST complete two courses of Introductory CS. Those two courses are also part of the CS minor (something that I am looking at). The CS minor does state however, that one cannot double count the minor courses with a students major. For most majors this means the elective portions (which is understandable), but for Statistics, this does not.

So does that mean that although it is required by the Statistics Dept. to take two programming courses, one can not concurrently receive a CS minor?

2) In much the same token, is it possible (and do people) major in Economics and then minor in Math? Some of the Economics major course requirements are [unfortunately] filled by the Math minor (in addition to the leniency allowed with Calculus III). Again does this mean that one can not major In Economics and minor in Math?

You’d get the best answer by asking the department directly, but my reading is that you’d have to take two additional upper-level courses in CS in order to get the minor.

Perfect questions to ask your advisor and the various departments during O-week. Don’t worry, you won’t fall behind if you have to wait a month. Also, you will probably wind up changing your mind anyway about precisely what you want to do once you know more about the departments, teachers, students and courses. Resist the temptation to plan the next four years in advance.

If you read the (long) Economics Department major discussion in the course catalog, you will see that what it really recommends for hard core Econ geeks is that they major in Math With Specialization In Economics, which is essentially an Applied Math major combined with an Economics minor, but you get to double-count everything. That actually sounds right up your alley.

My friend’s daughter started with Bio Major(She actually did finish the AP5 Bios series) and ended up Econ Major graduated last year and she is working in a Hedge Fund. Don’t worry about it too much.

Diane, Grace, Victor, and Sharon [and whoever does stats] will better answer these questions than anybody here. That’s what they’re paid to do.

(Not posting last names to keep search engines away, but do some looking up the dept websites or wait another month and you’ll know exactly who I’m talking about!)
