Can't Switch Majors???

I am a current second semester college freshman. I was originally an International Studies major for my first semester and now for my second semester, I’m taking Public Relations courses. I had decided, finally, that I wanted to switch to Nursing, and planned to begin taking pre-reqs starting this Summer. I knew that I would stick with it, because it was something I’d always wanted to do, but had been nervous to commit to. I was so excited about switching, but I just had a meeting with my advisor, and they said that by the time I’d be able to apply to Nursing School (after finishing prereqs) I would no longer be able to apply or switch majors because I had too many credits.

My university and many others as I’ve now learned, have a policy that once you hit a certain number of credits you can no longer switch your major. This policy is intended to get people out with degrees and to stop people from stalling, but I came into college with 45 credits from AP classes, and they are counting those credits against me.

I am extremely upset. I honestly believe I’ve discovered my future, and I had no idea that taking accelerated classes in high school could count against me in this way.

I was wondering if anyone else has been placed in this position and if anyone has found a way to get around it.

I took all those APs to try to get into a great college, and here I am being kept from doing what I want.

Without knowing what school you attend, it is hard for others to help you here. Perhaps you can apply for transfer admission to the nursing major at another school? However, note that nursing is a highly competitive major generally.

But note that many colleges do not count credit from AP scores into such credit limits.

Another option is to finish your degree and then go to a program that lets you get a BSN after completing another major…it’s called an accelerated BSN program. It seems to take a little over a year.

Transfer to a school where that won’t be a factor.
