Canterbury has accepted my son, but now wants a decision before March 10. I think his other schools all give decisions on March 10. I didn’t expect this situation. Is this unusual? Any advice on how to handle?
I’m sorry but I find it really hard to believe that Canterbury accepted anyone prior to M10. And I also find it incredibly hard to believe that they would ask for a commitment from a family in February. I have a brother who is a very high profile Canterbury Alum- so maybe I’ll check with him to see if there’s been a change in M10 Protocol. I’ll also check with an EC I know who has many Canterbury applicants as clients every year. I think she’ll find this post very interesting.
Over the years, many kids in our family have applied there and had to wait for M10 like everyone else. At the very earliest, you might get a fun acceptance call on M9 ( from the AO you worked with during the process ), but that’s as early as it ever got … and FWIW other schools ( not in the "Ten Schools " obviously ) will call M9 with good news, too.
Plus, I was once told by a faculty member on their AO team that they don’t make final determinations on applicants prior to March 1st because of their late deadline … so forgive me if I’m skeptical and more than a little shocked.
All I can say is - if this is actually happened … Canterbury is a great school but you are under no obligation whatsoever to respond to them prior to their scheduled revisit days or A10.
And- that’s the big red flag and I’m trying hard to be polite but No School ( and let’s not forget that Canterbury is a Top 30- 35 BS! ) would ever impose a deadline like that on a family prior to M10 decisions. I’m sorry but this acceptance makes zero sense to me so I’m inclined not to believe it… Especially when I’m hearing ALL BSs ( in the Top 40 and Single Sex schools) got swamped with apps this year. FP apps are through the roof and FA apps are always up but there was a significant increase across the board. Every year has been a record year… I know… but I’m told this year was completely off the charts.
FYI- The EC contacted Canterbury and they denied that this happened. The EC was angered by the OP because she has families waiting for Canterbury ( along with many, many other schools ) and this kind of reckless and false post makes her job harder. She also didn’t think that Canterbury would ever ask for a commitment prior to the traditional release date which they’ve always closely adhered to along with everyone else.
Needless to say- I was quickly placed on hold because her hair was on fire.
For the record: Canterbury told the EC that they are still reading apps and racing the clock to get their decisions off on time like everyone else. The school also took great offense that someone would say that their school accepted a student and demanded a commitment prior to M10. Absolutely false- would never happen in a million years.
This false claim is really unfair to the school and all families anxiously waiting for M10. I know one lovely young lady who reads CC daily and is waiting for decisions from schools including Cbury… and I didn’t want her to see this and get upset - especially now that I know that it didn’t happen.
I certainly didn’t mean to create such a fuss. I do happen to be telling the truth and just wanted some advice. I had no idea that March 10 was such a sacred date. I am new to all of this. So sorry for upsetting you.
People tend to get upset because they actually believe what admissions officers and schools say. What schools say for public consumption has absolutely nothing to do with what goes on behind the scenes. I personally know two students who were assured admittance at a boarding school that regularly takes fewer than 13% of its applicants; in both cases, well before March 10 - one student before March 10 the prior year. It’s impossible that education consultants don’t know that this goes on, although I guess they play the public consumption game as well.
Does anyone really think that Paris Hilton waited until March 10 to hear from Canterbury?
I’m not upset and I believe what I was told… and I certainly don’t believe they’d EVER jerk around this particular EC.
Okay, @91prep if you persist - here’s the simple answer to your question : You are under no obligation whatsoever to respond to them prior to their scheduled revisit days or A10.
@SatchelSF - They certainly didn’t wait to throw her out. And I call BS on your claim about early acceptances, too.
@SatchelSF: No more than I think Rick and Kathy were telling random strangers about it and asking for advice on what to do.
LOL, @PhotographerMom , I’m usually the one on here calling BS on everything!
Does Canterbury offer academic scholarships? Perhaps this was the case? Schools that give academic scholarships let the students know ahead of time and also expect an answer well before M10 so they can move to the next person on the list. Just trying to give OP the benefit of the doubt.
Oh and google reports that there are more than one Canterbury school. OP is it the one in CT?
