Should i sign up for a CAP course in my concentration? Or it doesn’t really matter???

It really doesn't matter. In fact, it's also cool to do one outside your concentration, because then you'll get to know a professor in a different field. Pick based on the class itself, not on the department.

although having an advisor outside of the field in witch you wish to study may not be the greatest idea. Then again, you don't have to keep your frosh advisor.

when does the list of cap courses become available, and when is the sign up period? thanks.

You might change the field in which you want to study, so it doesn't make sense to pick a class that only interests you moderately vs a class that's really cool, just because you want an advisor in your area. You can pick a different advisor sophomore year, plus when you declare your concentration you get an advisor within your department. And if your freshman advisor can't answer your questions about a given department, he or she can put you in touch with someone who can. So my advice would definitely be to pick based on the class rather than the department. I picked a Judaic Studies / History class when I knew that neither of those would be my area of concentration, but I ended up loving my advisor and finding her very helpful in picking classes.

they mailed a package that arrived yesterday for me, its really fascinating. i still havent returned my yellow sheets though, i should probably get on it

register for your CAP courses online it is a lot easier. also it doesnt really matter when you register as long as it is before the 30th of this month. if you register today it isn't even set in stone until the 30th. you can make changes up until then, so no need to rush

is there a submit button somewhere on the online form that I am missing? Or do i just click "log out"? Also, the arrows to move my preferences up and down aren't working. Is anyone else having this problem?

is it better to have a small or large cap course? does it make a difference?

also, a bunch of the CAP courses are offered as normal courses, so you could still take it, your advisor just wouldn't be the prof. of that class.

^ wait so its better to take a cap course that also isnt a regular class? why wont your advisor be the prof of that class?

no, ok, i'm in 09, so i dont remember the numbers and stuff. But I remember, that Neuro 1 was a CAP course. There are going to be like 400+ people in that class. 8 of which will have it as a CAP. Those 8 will have Stein or Paradiso, or whoever is the advisor, as their advisor. The other 392+ will not have a professor of BN1 as their advisor. If you really want to take the class (which presumably means you have some interest in the area) sign up for it, and if you get into the CAP (notice how the P stands for program) the prof of that class will be your advisor. Given that an advisor doesnt have more than like a dozen kids. Many CAP courses will have students in them who will not have the professor as an advisor. You can't go wrong either way. I didn't get into a CAP course last year, and I like my advisor. I also don't know how comfortable I would have been dropping a course that was taught by my advisor (there is a chance that after a few days, you will realize your CAP is a mistake) That's just me. You guys have to decide for yourself.

when did the CAP course selection material get sent?

I keep pressing Submit on the website, but it just takes me back to the login screen. Anybody else with the same problem?

yeah, thats what happens for me too. do you think that is what's supposed to happen?

Maybe its too early to sign up for courses yet. I think we can preregister for classes in July.

Man it sucks that all of my CAP courses are rather large classes. Im going to get screwed.

they arent going to accept you CAP selections until the 30th. therefore you just click the "log off" button, and when the 30th rolls around they will take into account the classes you selected along with everyone else. there is no real advantage to making your choices now or the 29th.

man its by June 30th? I dont get my AP scores until July so my course selection will be all out of whack!

damn them

For anyone having problems with CAP courses online (I am too), check out the admitted students board. Dean Shaw answered someones question about this in the "ask the admissions office" section.

some of you are saying that you are worried because the CAP classes you chose are big classes. are you just guessing that they will be big or do you somehow know the class sizes?
