Cap Poly Pomona or Cal Sate Chico?????

Am considering accepting my admission to Cal Poly Pomona - this was not my first choice, but I have received rejection letters from my dream UC's. After a brief pity party, I am now feeling better about where I will go from this point.

So...I am leaning toward CPP (engineering), will check out Chico and would appreciate any input/direction/advice. I have not yet seen either campus but will be visiting next week.

If you have any pros or cons for CPP or Chico - the engineering depts, campuses, academics, social scenes, dorms ... I'd really appreciate your help!

Thank You

was typing too quickly!

Cal Poly Pomona for engineering…

Which discipline are you interested in.

I suspect that Chico will be more of a commuter campus.

(Plus at CPP, you can work on the Rose Parade float!)

mom2collegekids: thanks for your thoughts. I’m admitted for Civil engineering, but am considering environmental engineering…
I was assuming that CPP, would be more of a commuter school than Chico because I’m imagining that Chico is out in the sticks?
Am very anxioous to see both campuses!

CPP is far superior in your major. FAR.

While there are going to be some commuters to CPP, there will also be a good number of residential students (even if that means that they’re living in closeby student apts.). Since there are only 2 Cal Polys in the whole big state, those two schools attract from the entire state.

Chico just isn’t that well known. There aren’t many reasons for an “out of area” student to select it.

Before I would select Enviro E, I would check the job prospects. That seems to be an area of eng’g that has unemployed graduates.

CPP

45%
First-year students living in college housing

13%
All undergraduates living in college housing

The above may not tell the whole story. *Yes, a number wil commute because the school is very assessible to those living in Orange County, Riverside County and LA County. *But, most CSUs just don’t have a lot of “true campus housing” so many kids are living in nearby apts…but those don’t get counted.

All the STEM employers in Calif are impressed by the Cal Polys. * I’m not saying that a Chico grad wouldn’t get hired, it’s just that the recruiters are more likely going to fish at a Cal Poly. *

Chico

62%
First-year students living in college housing

1%
All undergraduates living in college housing

Thanks fliger and mom2collegekids - all of your input is extremely helpful and appreciated!

Cal poly Pomona has a much better civil engineering program.

Well, we visited Cal Poly Pomona and liked it. Don’t think we will make the trek to Chico. Will now sit tight and wait to hear about an appeal to the first choice school and if that is a no…looks like it will be CPP for me!

Id pick the school with the higher retention rate

Thanks again for all the help - I’ll be heading to Cal Poly Pomona this fall and am looking forward to it!
