I see alot of people asking questions about CAP so I figured I’d answer any questions you all may have. I was a cap student at UT-Arlington last year and now am a UT student
How much did it cost per semester for the CAP program at UTA since they don’t give any financial aid? How was the experience keeping the gpa above 3.2? Are you still in the transition of getting the major you want at UT or are you sticking with Liberal Arts and Natural Science type majors? Personally I just got Capped yesterday and I’ve only got accepted to UNT and UTD and messed up my application for TCU. I’ve got this preconceived notion that I need to go to UT to keep pushing myself so I was wondering if you thought it was worth it to go through cap at UTA and force your way in or should you try and transfer from say UTD after freshman year as long as gpa is 3.7+? Also did you lose AP credits going through CAP or did you just request them once you got to UT for your Sophmore year? Thanks so much
First, thank you for coming here to answer questions. I imagine you will get plenty. Did you transfer into UT with a major other than liberal arts?
@Turner1999 How much did it cost per semester for the CAP program at UTA since they don’t give any financial aid
-Whatever the sticker price was thats what I ended up paying, I wanna say it was around 4k a semester in tuition fees
How was the experience keeping the gpa above 3.2?
-Very easy, I ended up with a 3.75. The only concern is UTA has a very bad math department so it was common for students to struggle with Pre-Cal and Calc. Knew of a few people who failed Pre-Cal and didnt qualify for CAP anymore because of it
Are you still in the transition of getting the major you want at UT or are you sticking with Liberal Arts and Natural Science type majors?
-I’m an economics major right now but attempting to apply for McCombs this semester, If I dont get into McCombs I’d still be happy as an Econ major.

-As long as you have a 3.5+ you shouldn’t have much of a problem transferring into COLA, for CNS I’m honestly not sure. Personally I would do CAP as opposed to risk not being able to get in. You just claim the AP credit once you get to UT!
If you have any more questions feel free to ask
@austingal I transferred into Economics (within COLA) but knew of people who got into McCombs, CNS and Moody (I don’t think I knew anyone that was rejected by Moody, easily was friends with over 10 people that got into everything from Advertising to RTF) through CAP.
@JackM82 Were CAP students assigned together as roommates?
@JackM82 thank you so much!! How was the experience at UTA? Did you get to stay on campus or were you treated like you weren’t suppose to be there as a CAP student? Finally, If I already completed precal in high school and opted out of Calc for Ap Stats my senior year, do you think I will be put directly into Calc at UTA?(math is not my strong suit) thanks again
@austingal Nope but it was pretty easy to find a CAP roommate through either the class of 19 groupme or through the UTA housing app.
@Turner1999
I enjoyed my time at UTA, the student gym (the MAC) was awesome and is a great place to work. I stayed in KC Hall, most people at UTA aren’t fans of the CAP students so its just one of those things you dont advertise too much. You’ll have to take the math placement test to determine if you can take Calc, like I said above though be weary of taking Pre Cal and up at UTA. The math department there is horrible and it can sometimes bite you in the ass
@JackM82
thank you so much for answering questions.
approximately how many students were in cap when you were at ut arlington? what other departments or professors should i beware of? do you happen to know any students that were in cap and had successfully transferred into nursing at ut austin? thank you again
@mich17carat Honestly not sure, I wanna say there were around 400 or 300 at UTA (but again dont quote me on that). I just remember during orientation when all the CAP kids met with the advisors and he told us that only 30% of us would make it to UT and we all thought that was just to scare us, but it turned out that was pretty accurate. The geology department at UTA is pretty easy so I’d recommend that for anyone like me who just wanted to knock out an easy science. For the nursing question I personally didnt know of anyone, I knew a TON of people at UTA who were pre-nursing there though
How was Calc I and Calc II in CAP? I’m bad at math and scared of bombing Calc II.
I was thinking of just taking the easiest classes and majoring in a Liberal Art (history) so I can go to UT and then apply to law school. At least then I won’t have to worry about making a C in a class or bombing math. Plus, with econ/finance for McCombs, I need to take not only CALC I and II, but macro and microeconomics which is just more weight.
@damon99 I was kind of in a similar shoe. I’m currently an economics major at UT but I decided to take Calc 1 & 2 online at a community college ( very easy, did one in the fall semester and one during winter break). Right now as an econ major in my soph year the plan is to apply to McCombs, if I get in then thats great but if not I’ll either hopefully get a good job as an econ major, go to law school, or go get my master in finance (10 month program) somewhere after I graduate
1.Can you explain how having AP credits will make it more difficult for me to get my 30 hours? If I have 12 AP classes under my belt but have not passed them all would achieving all 30 hours be possible?
2.If I do not meet the 30 hour requirement after 1 year do I still get guaranteed admission after 2 years?
3.How difficult would it be to transfer into more selective schools such as McComb’s?
4.Do I need to select a major if I attend for a year or do I just enroll in general courses?
5.What precautions can I take ahead of time to ensure I get my 30 hours? Is there a certain time I can register for classes to make sure I’m at the front of the line? Would I just be competing with CAP students for space into these courses or all students?
6.Why do I only 1/3 of CAP students go on to transfer to UT? What are some common errors I can look out for?
If I don’t receive my 30 hours when will I find out? Prior to enrollment or over winter break?
- There is a pretty wide selection of classes you can take, so getting 30 hours wont be too bad
- No
- McCombs is very difficult to get into, and youll need the prereqs to even apply (Calc 1 and 2, micro and macro)
- You are considered Undeclared-CAP, your advisor (a CAP advisor ) will help with picking classes
- You will be able to get 30 hours no matter what, never heard of anyone not getting 30 hours
- Some fall in love with their CAP school (alot get involved with greek life and stay), realize they cant afford UT, fail 1 class and wont have enough hours, dont get their transcript to UT in time, or have under a 3.2 gpa
I have been looking all over for a definitive answer, but no where on the UT austin does it definitively say who gets offered CAP. From what I understand it’s either…
A) anyone from texas who gets denied ut austin
B) anyone who gets accepted into a ut school (like utsa, or uta)
C) cap is just an extension of the highly competive admission decions and only the top students are offered.
I really want to go to ut austin but when my rank is 245/812 cap is my only hope:(
Its a mixture of A and C, you will be fine. When given cap you have to meet certain requirements (Class rank, Test scores) to qualify for CAP campuses so I’d imagine if you didnt meet any of the requirements you wouldn’t receive CAP
@JackM82 Thanks for answering all these questions! I have a couple myself…
-
Did UTA offer no financial aid at all, or was it just a very small amount?
-
Do you know what happens to students who exempt the TSI test through SAT scores? Do you know what math they get put into?
-
How helpful was the CAP advisor in ensuring that you were taking the proper courses to transfer to UT?
Thanks so much!

Not super familiar on this since I was full pay anyway, but what I can say is that being CAP disqualifies you from any merit scholarship from UTA, UTSA, etc -
Do you know what happens to students who exempt the TSI test through SAT scores? Do you know what math they get put into?
From what I understand the TSI keeps you out of a remedial math, so then you take a math placement test to determine which class you’ll be in. -

They will give you a list of classes that will transfer so thats helpful. However besides that the advisor isn’t very helpful, you need to do alot of your own research on your potential major at UT. Can’t even express to you the number of times he said “I can’t answer that you’ll have to ask UT”, any former CAP students at UTA will remember Manny (pretty sure he is no longer cap counselor). They will also try to convince you to stay at UTA which can be frustrating, definitley worked with a few people I know.
