For all of you who just received word that you were offered the Cap program...I feel your pain. Just like you, I logged onto bealonghorn, and saw the very disappointing news. That was two years ago, and all I can say is time sure does fly.

At the time I had two choices: go to Rutgers, a school that I applied to just for the heck of it... or go into the Cap Program. I took some time weighing out the pros and cons...Rutgers is a pretty good school with great programs, but it was out of state, expensive, and I had never visited. Then there was UT-Arlington, the closest system school I could attend for the Cap Program. Naturally, I said, " to hell with UTA! I'll just go to Rutgers!"...but as I looked into Rutgers, I finally began to realize it wasn't for me...It also wasn't what I really wanted. Lets face it folks, Austin is one of the best places in the world- a great city, awesome university, and cool people. So, with much thought, I decided to sign up for the cap program.

The year at UT-Arlington went by fast. I met a lot of good friends for life, and I have a new found respect for last tier universities...lol. UT-Arlington is by no means like Austin, but it is a great way to start your college career. The worst part of the whole cap experience was having to say goodbye to friends at the end of the spring semester.

Ok enough about me... as for some advice on deciding what to do...Look at all the options. If Austin is where you have always wanted to go, then it would be a good idea to consider the cap program. It's great if you have been accepted to other colleges, but please do not base your enrollment decision because of your initial rejection from Austin. You might be very disappointed during your first semester at a school you know little about.

To sum this all up... make informed decisions, take a tour of the closest cap-participating system school, and pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you've done.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to pm me.

Masmaha Thanks so much for posting this info. I have been reading some of the disappointed posts in the UT forum here and I truly feel so bad for these people. It's good for you to remind everyone of the alternatives and that they can eventually get in if that's what they still want to do. I'm hoping that everyone finds their niche after all these acceptances and rejections are over.

finally there's someone that goes to UT in here. I was looking on the Tulane section and there are some students there telling enterring freshman about their experiences and about things we should do when we get to New Orleans. Could someone do the same for UT-Austin? :) I think a lot of people would appreciate it.

I'm majoring in anthropology...UT-Arlington is a mix of commuter school and traditional campus. The dorms are pretty nice, especially the newest ones, in fact all have private baths. The overall campus is pretty with trees everywhere and lots of sitting areas. It's also a very safe campus.

The main issue with uta is that most students either dont live on campus or if they do, they usually go home on the weekends. The reason for that is not because of the school but rather the city of Arlington. The city is so spread out that having a car to get around is a necessity. Also, there is not much going on around arlington...but that will just make you even more motivated to go to UT... Within the university there are lots of activities going on... Also the campus is very diverse with many international students. It really is a great way to start out... If anyone is considering attending UTA for the cap program and has some questions...feel free to contact me. I used to work as student admissions telecounselor there so I know a lot about the campus and the cap program.

i live in the dallas area and thinking about going to UT Arlington. Majoring in Engineering. What are the requirements for admission into the engineering college. Acceptance rate? Also, what is Cap ?

I had a completely different experience. I got into all my safeties and still chose UTSA CAP over all of them. After a ton of b.s. from the amdinistration that included losing my housing agreement and financial aid records, I rescinded my CAP agreement and opted to go to Texas A&M instead. I'm lookinhg at a 3.4 this semeseter, so the 3.2 I would have needed in CAP would have been really easy to get. However, I'm glad I went ahead and got started at A&M. The transition from high school to college is hard enough, and if you have to do CAP, you really dont even fully make the transition for another year.

hey Masmaha1234, how would you describe UT arlington's Engineering department? Can i get in there through the cap program?
i'll appreciate some advice.

If you don't mind me asking, threadmaker, what was your rank/sat/everything else when you applied to UT when you were offered the CAP option?

My brother was offered the same option, and he decided to go to UTArlington as well. He's now a senior at UT doing pre-med by majoring in biochemistry (b.s). he's come a long way!
