@anonymoose100 thats exactly what i did , i switched to ECE , but i would high recommend thinking about it cause you have till next february to decide. ECE is good but you have to like circuits and e&m , since the first 2 years are electrical engineering courses also , so think and look into it , look at the degree plan and etc. Join any clubs and work-study won’t distract if you know how to manage time properly
@MyLonghorn Do you think I should take harder classes especially heavy on math and science, like precal+Calc 1+Calc 2 and physics or easier classes to increase my chances of getting a higher GPA? Like, will taking harder classes look better and would it be worth it?
I also heard classes are generally more difficult at UT compared to UTSA
@anonymoose100 well your going to have to take Calc 1 + Calc 2 and Engineering Physics 1 + Lab to even apply for engineering , so id assume you would have to take that , and i have no doubt they are harder , i don’t know if the curriculum it self is harder or not but there is significant amounts of more competition which would make it harder
@MyLonghorn Thank you for your very generous participation in this forum for the students who are wrestling with CAP/PACE options. While I don’t think my son is ultimately going to choose this route due to what appear to be much better guaranteed options elsewhere, we do appreciate your sharing of experiences and advice about the program. Good luck in Austin!
@sltxdad Thanks and no problem , i don’t mind giving advice at all since the whole process is so filled with so much uncertainty and i can completely understand why your son would choose somewhere else . Good Luck to Him Also !
@MyLonghorn
How hard is the math placement test to get into Calculas ?
@Machovich it isn’t that bad but id highly recommend looking into UTSA 's jumpstart program in the summer , those are really good review sessions and there free
@MyLonghorn would I be able to do utsa jump start considering Im attending UT Arlingtn?
Actually I just read somewhere that you don’t have to take to the math placement test if you scored above or equal to a 600/26
@Machovich i do not think you can do that since your a student of UT Arlington and idk about the second part i would look into it
@MyLonghorn Hey! I’ve been reading all your stuff and was delighted to see you still answering stuff so I made an account. I’m a high school senior who just accepted my CAP agreement b/c it was best shot @ Austin, my dream school. I do have many worries & questions. Thank you so much if you do answer!
1.) I was worried I would get comfy at my CAP school and not want to transfer like I hear many do so I chose a school (UTEP) that doesn’t even offer my major (economics) so I would have to trnasfer even if I liked it. Was this smart or terribly dumb? Don’t mind going from houston to el paso if it’s for UT haha.
2.) When will your CAP school contact you about things? I accepted my agreement 5 days ago and haven’t received anything. ex) housing, orientation, etc. I need to take calc 1 & calc 2 to meet the ECON major requirements but struggle with math. at UTEP you must take placement exams to get into calculus courses as a freshman… Might you know how long I can procrastinate taking these? - So I can master precal in the meantime…
3) how is CAP?
4) When transferring to UT, is my major economics guaranteed because it’s in COLA, or do they mean only liberal arts as a major is guaranteed and econ I would have to compete for? If I don’t get economics can I eventually declare it if I do undg. studies?
5) Thank you so much if you answer!
@habache622
this year i dont think CAP nor PACE is allowed into undg.studies automatically by meeting the 3.2 gpa requirements, only liberal arts.
So even if you are exempt, do you still have to take a placement exam for math related courses?
I’m a CAP student at UT Arlington; the math placement test has to be taken regardless of SAT/ACT score if you plan to take calculus. The test itself goes no higher than trigonometry. You should be fine if you review major concepts like trig circle, but again that’s the highest they’ll go in terms of the rigor of the test.
@habache622
- imo doesn’t really matter which CAP school you go to since they are all similar , however UTSA has the most CAP students so you make good friends that transfer with you .
- they should contact you / get an email in a 2 weeks or so and then one during your CAP year in november. Also i don’t think you need calculus to get into econ , but you will need it to graduate
3)CAP isn’t too bad , its just like going to any other university however you have to follow the cap course list and are only allowed to take those classes. - Yes , Economics is guaranteed the major it self is guaranteed and you don’t have to compete for it , so relax cause I’m pretty sure you can get a 3.2
@Mylonghorn thank a bunch dude. One last thing, sorry to perpetuate a question you already answered but could you visit this link and read under “late fall initial contact” http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/cap/current/timeline
It states “admission to specific majors within the college of liberal arts is not guaranteed” …What the heck do they mean by that? -why I was worried about the whole econ thing. I’ve heard both stories from UT Adm. Officers over the phone so what is really guaranteed? Wth lol?
@habache622 i don’t know 100% , but we got to pick which guaranteed major within COLA we wanted to apply for as our 2nd option , so for this year we got to choose the major but that may not be the case next year … so to leave you still confused
Does anyone know what type of financial help you get as a CAP student?
@MCCXVII if you mean federal financial aid like loans , and grants , you’ll get that same that you would get any other public texas school cause they cost the same . if you mean by scholarships or etc … as a CAP student you are disqualified from getting any UTSA scholarships regardless of your rank or SAT , So the 2 ways you can get money is federal or non-UTSA scholarships
