For those who have been offered the CAP:
where are yall going/what are yall doing?

i just found i got cap this morning... :/
im just gonna go to UH honors. the cap program is good for kids that can't imagine not going to UT. if u do do the cap thing i suggest UTSA or maybe UT Tyler.

UTSA right here.

Im still considering UTSA and UT Tyler, but Im leaning toward the Honors Programs at Baylor/TCU, or the engineering school at a&m. I dont know what I want to do, because UT was my top choice. But CAP sounds like bs, and I dont think I'll take it. Baylor's Honors College has an average SAT of 1370, and A&M's engineering program is highly selective. These are schools that wanted me to join a really selective group, whereas UT is btelling me to come if I'll consent to being shoved aside for a year.

Why are you guys not looking at UTA? and why are you considering Tyler?

UTSA's estimated cost of attendance for living on campus is around $17k. I was hoping its less, but maybe its just anm overly conservative estimate, since they included 3k for transportation and personal expenses.

Vyse,

check out the collegeboard site for UTSA if you want a good estimate on the costs..i believe it was more expensive than $10,000 a year

Yeah, I finally found it on UTSA's site and edited my post. They worded it deceptively original by not counting tuition and fees together.

I found out I got into CAP last weekend. I'm not going to spend a year at a crappy place like UTSA. forget UT-Austin.

some of you guys needs to think about the LONG TERM..not just the fact that you'll be going to an embarassing school for a year. a year is NOT a long time compared to the life you have ahead of you. if UT is the school youw ant to be at..don't settle for anything less by attending another school and then having to HOPE that they even bother to look at your transcript when you try to transfer. why go through all that when you can have a guaranteed spot if you get a 3.2 it' snot like you guys are planning on getting anything lower than that at another university

^ I agree entirely now. I think what alextx is saying, and what I was saying earlier is just a first reaction to disappointing news. Yeah, its going to be frustrating when you're listed in your school's yearbook as going to a no name school while people who did much worse than you got into better places, but you'll get what you were aiming for eventually, and that's more important in the long run.

it seems like especially this year, that people have been very understanding when you tell them you got CAP'ed. i believe a record number of people got cap'ed this year..but i guess that correlates with the ever increasing number of kids who apply.

i talked to a ut admissions lady and she told me that approximately 76% of the kids who were admitted this year finished in the top 10% of their high school class. they only admitted 9000 applicants, so that means 6840 were already taken automatically. they offer the CAP to the next 6000 qualified applicants, and make no mistake that these applicants were qualified. The admissions lady told me that the first 9000 applications that were approved were admitted, so it was basically luck of the draw of when you turned in your app pretty much and when they reviewed it. there were 27000 applications and only 15000 people recieved any kind of offer from ut.

i wish i knew...how many people out of the 9000 have to go to the Summer Freshman thing

Monkey - between 2001 and 2003, the summer admits averaged about 800 per year.

i'm going to UT arlington... i visited the place today..... its really not as bad as i thought it wud b.... actually its not bad at all... as per US News ranking.... its 4th tier... compared to UT #17... but better than UTSA... which is not ranked at all... i didnt see it unless it slipped my eye...
i have to say that the dorms are better at arlington than austin....
its only the surrounding areas of arlington that gave me an initial bad impression... however visiting really helps...

who cares if UT Arlington is ranked ahead of UTSA. Afetr getting capped, its a bit silly to worry which is the most preigious of the CAP schools. Your goal should be to have as much fun as possible next year and get the 3.2 you need to get to Austin. If you accept the CAP, you're sacrificing prestige for one year.

After reading this thread, I'm having second thoughts about turning down the CAP offer. The only school that I got into that I would choose over UT would be NYU, but its $45,000 a year. I also like Austin a lot more and I think it would be better to spend my undergraduate years in a place like Austin rather than in the middle of NYC. Another school that I could consider would be Boston University...

What do you guys think would be the best choice?

should i go cap or tech? im a nontop 10 percenter, but can get in at anywhere in the state other than ut and rice(most likely). i guess id probably just go to utep or utpb for cap.
