just got home… was about 57 degrees and damp but thankfully not pouring down rain. well organized!! and a free T-shirt. had a great breakfast spread, muffins, croissants, fruit, bagals, drinks etc… info session was well done, with 2 speakers and a panel of students which was nice. Kids then went off to their respective schools by bus and lunch at the ferg, parents had a very nice box lunch variety of different sandwiches. Then took a bus tour of campus…really nice energetic tour guide. They then had some different info sessions for parents…ie resident life, campus safety etc. They had reserved 500 seats in the stadium if students parents wanted to go to the football celebration. I chose to drive home, and son went back to honors college to say hi again to Dr Morgan and Dean Sharpe

Agreed! Today made my college decision Still wish I could have gone on a real tour though, I like the little facts and things you get along the way.

The stadium was less than half full and lasted until about 2:40. Apparently the threat of and eventual rain dissuaded some people from coming to the celebration. Even with not as many people as expected, the crowd was very loud and excited. It is amazing how many feats the Alabama football team accomplished this year. Plus, everyone needed to do the cheers and sing the songs one last time before the A Day game this spring. The only problem is that the stadium was confused as to shout Texas or Longhorns during Rammer Jammer. Either one worked.

I’m glad that people enjoyed CSD. As I was at the stadium, I only saw a couple CSD participants mulling about when I went back to my dorm. CSD participants, I’d like to hear more about your impressions of UA, both good and bad. As always, we are here to answer any questions you may have. Roll Tide!

SEA-TIDE: I wanted to know more about the honors housing. I toured Ridgecrest South yesterday and it was very nice. My main question is how does the honors housing process work? Where do most freshmen stay? Hoe many honors dorms are there? Which one would you suggest? When is the deadline to apply for housing?

dwtisdale, there are 60 residence halls at UA, some are honors some are college specific. Ridgecrest south is the newest and is both honors and non honors students. according to the talk i went to, you can go online now and begin to request your housing and potentially your roommate. they stressed that if you are an honors student you can pull in other honors students as roomates but not non honors. or if you were in the residence of the business school you can pull in other business student roomies but not non buisiness roomies. you have to pay the housing deposit but all but 25 of that is refundable if you contact them by july 1 and advise you are not going (however you must first pay your enrollment deposit and i dont think that is refundable) They compared the housing app to “seat selection” on an air flight, you can go on and actually pick your suite in whatever building you choose. if i understood correctly right now by doing this nothing is written in stone, you can still make changes to it until may?

click on each one and scroll down to look at pictures and to watch videos to get an idea about each one.
Ignore the note about Ridgecrest South construction…it’s complete and kids are living there.

There are 6 honors buildings. They are all popular because they are all basically the same - private rooms, living room, kitchenette, bathrooms. Students tend to make their decisions by location of dorm in relation to what part of campus they want quicker access to.

One of the towers in Ridgecrest South is essentially all freshmen. This year, they had some extra rooms, so those were filled with some other kids.

It’s just my opinion, but I think that Riverside is the quietest of all the honors housing. Others may say differently. Riverside has the honors pool (which others can use).

depends on you and what you feel is most important. if you want to be housed with kids with similar interests and classes then a subject based housing option may be what you want. if you want to be surrounded by kids with high level of academic acheivement all housing would offer you that, if you are more interested in having a single room vs a double, then that would make you lean a different way. my son will go for a single room!! he has lived in a dorm, double room with community bathrooms for the past 3 years…if he could live off campus he would LOL

If I were you, I’d start in the honors dorms, because you can always later move to the business dorms (but you can’t do the reverse). Bama doesn’t let kids start in other dorms and then move to Honors.

I would definitely choose honors just to have the private room!

I would think that Ridgecrest South is the more “active” hall.

What was your opinion of Bama from CSDay? Did you get to visit the B-school and/or the Business Library? Since you’re also interested in pre-med, did you visit Shelby and the new Science Complex?

Assuming you toured the business school, they would have plugged Friedman hall, which is what they did. It was the first dorm to have some suite-style rooms, not to be confused with the super suites found in the honors dorms. The business school prides itself on having all it’s buildings together in arguably the best location on campus. Friedman is part of this complex. That’s the selling point. However, as a freshman, you won’t have all your classes in Bidgood and Alston, so the point is somewhat moot.

Yes, the honors dorms are more expensive than Friedman, but they are so worth it, IMHO. The Ridgecrest buildings aren’t too far from the business school, it’s almost a straight shot actually. Another thing about Friedman is that it’s substance free. For those who are underage all dorms are technically substance free anyway, but it is still something to know. I don’t know anyone who has lived in Friedman, but I wasn’t taking freshman business classes either. Remember too that you can move off campus after freshman year.

Just to clarify things, room selection for freshman has not started yet. There are roommate finders on both facebook and housing’s website where you can meet people, but actual room selection doesn’t start until March/April. If they haven’t already, housing will send an e-mail about using a proxy code to pull in a roommate. Also, I believe one of the time periods for an earlier selection time is ending soon, look at the freshman room selection schedule for more details [Housing & Residential Communities - The University of Alabama](http://housing.ua.edu/roomselectionschedulefr.cfm) .

I thought it was very nice that the rain held off until the very end of the celebration

CSD was well done, but I don’t think we walked out knowing a lot more than we did between the regular visit and Honors Day program. Which is fine when it’s your 4th time on campus :)

I went to the Parent’s Panel and Residential Life program while D went to the Arts & Science program, specifically Social Sciences. The only thing that bothered her was that there was a group of girls sitting in the front of one of her presentations that were just talking away while the professor was speaking. On the good side, the history professor and Jami Gates saw her at different points of the day, remembered her and started chatting with her.

Thanks so much for the tips on driving into campus from 359 (I now understand the difference between downtown & the strip!) and about Alumni Hall. We were a little disappointed in the BCS shirts in the Ferg store, so we stopped at Alumni Hall on the way out and got some cool ones.

Anyone know if the lecture was different between the two different rooms during the CSD thing? Somehow I ended up in sellers instead of rast so I worried I might have missed something important. Listened with the health students and stuff instead of the EG ones.

worriedstudent10, did you still get a tour of the engineering buildings? I thought that each college has a separate information session (and possibly lunch?). Assuming you decide to attend UA, you will attend a session with advisors from your college during Bama bound and get all the relevant info then.
