Capstone recap

*Anyone know if the lecture was different between the two different rooms during the CSD thing? Somehow I ended up in sellers instead of rast so I worried I might have missed something important. Listened with the health students and stuff instead of the EG ones. *

Where did you end up? Isn’t your major Engineering or CS? Or am I getting you mixed up with someone else?

SEA_Tide is right that Bama Bound will have more opportunities.

Yes you are right, I’m CS, but anyway I was in the wrong room for the student panel and Dean Sharpe’s speech thing. I caught on to my mistake before it was over and slipped out and into the engineering group before they split up for the tour. I was just worried that the Student panel thing might have been different.

What kind of information were you looking for from this panel? I doubt it’s not anything you couldn’t get from asking questions here.

We were in the correct hall and were impressed with Dean Sharpe, Jacqueline Morgan, Jami Gates, the ambassadors, etc. When DD went on the engineering tour, she thought she’d get to see where her classes might be, meet with professors, or at least, meet with other CS students. She did not. Dean Sharpe did say he would put her in contact with people to answer any questions. The dorms are crazy nice. Food was good. Rain was a pain but did not get heavy or windy until the end of the day. We had really good appetizers and burgers for dinner at Mugshots. If my student decides to go to UA, I will totally understand why. She is still waiting on scholarship news from a couple of other schools, but UA did put on a fun and informative day. We are both very glad we took the time to make the trip.

Glad you had a nice visit.

When DD went on the engineering tour, she thought she’d get to see where her classes might be, meet with professors, or at least, meet with other CS students. She did not.

Since this was a 3 day weekend, they don’t typically ask profs and students to come to CSDay for interactions. Many take advantage of the 3 day weekend to go snow skiing, snow boarding, etc.

Personally, I think CSDay should be on a school day or at least advise that people arrive on early Friday to meet profs, see students in classes, etc.

Who you do know that goes skiing and snowboarding on the MLK holiday? Most people I know (friends and fellow students) don’t do anything since we’ve just come back from a major holiday. In fact, most grad student and faculty come into work anyway.

I was not really wondering anything specific, was just worried that I might have missed something Computer Science related since I was in the wrong room. I was a little disappointed about not getting to meet any other computer science students though, most of the engineering group I talked to were chem engineering electrical engineering or really anything but computer science. One was thinking about computer science but at the time he was chemical. I’m a bit worried that I’ll be behind when I get to UA due to my schools lack class on subjects like that.

Especially with majors in the college of engineering, UA understands the plight of students who are unaware of what exactly their major entails. During Bama Bound, there will be opportunities to meet with other incoming and current computer science students. Before your Bama Bound session, look into the course catalog and research your major and what classes you’d like to take. You’d be ahead of the vast majority of incoming students.

Will do, I’ll go check that out right now. I’ve got a cousin that is in the CS program right now, but he’s co-oping in maryland for this semester and won’t be back till this summer, so I don’t get to talk to him much. Most of what I’ve heard from him though was lots of physics and computer programming classes once he got out of the basics, that and he had to take an additional science for something. Ended up taking geology I think.

Did we talk about possibly taking some summer school classes at your local CC to kind of give you a “head start” on some classes that you think your high school is lacking?

I think you told me that someone from your high school (a relative?) felt like your high school hadn’t adequately prepared you for calculus?

Don’t forget to immediately take advantage of the Center for Teaching and Learning at UA for free tutoring in various subjects…including math.

Yes thanks for reminding me. I’m a tad bit forgetful sometimes.

I’m sure you’ll be fine, but son did get an email about a summer program for those that feel they need a boost. We talked to a lot of students this weekend about class size and honors versus nonhonors and we’re going to take that into account when registering for classes. Son may opt for honors on many of his math/science classes just so he can get the small class size. He’ll of course ask advice from his advisor first. Either way, son is taking Calculus AB right now, and no matter what he gets on the AP test, he’s taking Calculus I. Too much math in engineering to not get a firm foothold. Now, we did meet a lot of premeds who tested out of their first year of calculus, but didn’t need any further math.

They better check with their advisor. Some med schools will not accept AP Credits as your only calculus.

SEA-Tide: what are you majoring in?

I think he’s buisness.

I’m dual majoring in Finance and Economics with an international concentration in both. However the program I’m in for a BS/MS, I need all three semesters of calculus and possibly more if I pick up a math major. Do not take a semester off from math as you will be very rusty when you come back (I got a 5 on AP Calc AB and am in MATH 126 (Calc II) at UA).

Worriedstudent10, I remember you mentioning that you could do some program at a community college this summer. Are you still going to do that? I’d suggest taking some science and math classes through that if at all possible. Otherwise, go down to the public library and start reading. Even with the internet, libraries are still a great resource for knowledge.
