Capstone Scholars Day

My son and husband will be making arrangements to travel from Virginia for this event. My son is interested in aerospace engineering, marching band and music ensembles and now volunteering for the rescue squad. They are arriving on Friday evening and leaving late Sunday night. We have already visited, toured and spoke with folks in engineering and band. My question is what can they do on Saturday night and Sunday to get a real feel for the campus? What I am hoping they get out of the official event is a real feel for the academic side of the school. When we visited in the spring it was just a general tour and not so much about the academic side of Alabama. Never talked to anyone in the honors college.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My question is what can they do on Saturday night and Sunday to get a real feel for the campus?

I’m not sure. That’s a 3 day weekend (Martin Luther King weekend), so it may not be a weekend when many events are scheduled.

Many students take advantage of 3 day weekends in the winter to go skiing, to go warmer areas (Florida), go home, do community service trips, visiting friends, etc.

They could visit some of the campus museums…

[The University of Alabama Museums](http://museums.ua.edu/)
Paul Bear Bryant Museum - open daily 9 - 4 [Paul W. Bryant Museum](http://bryantmuseum.ua.edu/)

Museum of Natural History (on campus) [Alabama Museum of Natural History](http://amnh.ua.edu/) Would be possible if they could get there before 4:30 pm on Saturday. It’s closed on Sunday.

They could also visit some of the campus five libraries. http://www.lib.ua.edu/</a> click on the links to the 5 libraries.

Rodgers is the engineering library <a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama;

You can look to see if any home game basketball games are scheduled or if any other events are scheduled. I just checked the theater performances, and none are planned for that weekend.

Since they will be getting a feel for the campus on CSDay, it might be a good idea for them to use some of their time seeing things that are right off campus…like RiverWalk, the new Amphitheater [Tuscaloosa Amphitheater : Home](http://www.tuscaloosaamphitheater.com/) ,

and check out Downtown Tuscaloosa, Midtown Village, and The Strip for places to eat.

*When we visited in the spring it was just a general tour and not so much about the academic side of Alabama. Never talked to anyone in the honors college. *

During CSDay is all about Honors…so plenty of opportunities to talk to honors faculty.

Since they are arriving Friday night and leaving Sunday night, they really won’t be on campus during “office hours” where they can get a more academic feel for the campus other than what they’ll get at CSDay.

If they could arrive earlier on Friday, they could sit in on some classes and talk to profs and such.

Thanks for the ideas. I’m thinking the very late flight out of Atlanta might be too much time. I know they are going to do lots of driving around town and just trying to get a feel for the place. I also checked the school calendar and your right, not to much going on that weekend.
My son decided not to apply for UFE and CBHP so I know he won’t be coming back to visit before orientation.

On a side note, I watched some of the CBH presentations yesterday and I was most impressed. What a terrific group of young people. Than it made me more made my son won’t apply - says he is not interested! Ugh.

hokiefan: Did your son see any of the presentations from CBH? Perhaps if he does, he may change his mind. If it’s any comfort, my son did not want to apply to CBH when he was a senior. On the day that the application was due, he changed his mind. Fortunately, he had all the pieces available to complete the application.

Momreads,
He did not see the presentations as he was at band practice than off to a community service project. Maybe today. He does have all the pieces in place just needs to fill the darn thing out. Thanks for the advice.

Can I suggest a trip to Cypress Inn for lunch or dinner?

Since it will be dark early, I highly recommend you go for lunch. It is a beautiful view of the river, and the food is delicious. Lunch hours are 11 to 2.

Thanks for the lunch suggestions. I’ll pass the suggestion onto my guys. The flights were just booked today. They have the entire day on Sunday to explore as their flight isn’t leaving Atlanta until 10PM.

We’ve found that some places to eat on The Strip and Downtown are closed on Sundays. So, when we’re in T-town for a weekend, we tend to eat Downtown or on The Strip on Saturdays and at Midtown Village on Sundays.

Since it’s just your son and H, they may prefer more casual eating venues…like Bento Japanese or Mellow Mushroom or places like that.

Cypress Inn is open for lunch on Sundays. We just had lunch there this past Sunday when we brought son back to school after Thanksgiving. It was a gorgeous day and lovely view of the river. Son really enjoyed it and appreciated seeing the beautiful natural surroundings outside of campus.

The Cypress Inn sounds great and might be a nice change from the usual types of places they eat. But I have to tell you the Mellow Mushroom is one of my husbands favs. We have one in Virginia that we try to get to when we are in the UVA area. We did not realize they had a Mellow Mushroom when we were down there in the Spring to visit Alabama. When my husband found out he put that item in the ‘reason to pick Bama’ column of my son’s cheat sheet.

I’ll probably flipped back through these threads and find the one about all the good places to eat. I was just hoping that they might get alittle more student interaction and such to really get a feel for what the kids are like. I’m sure they will have fun especially since I won’t be along to nitpick. I also wanted them to find a Church to attend on Sunday. They are Lutheran and I am a Catholic so kind of flexible. Thanks again. Roll Tide.

We made it to Nicks in the Sticks when we were in T-Town for the Georgia St game.

It’s really called Nick’s Original Filet House, but it’s in the sticks…lol

Anyway…food very good. No sign outside, so we passed it at first (it was dark). Very, super casual.

They have a drink there called, Nicodemus…and it may taste like punch but it’s got Bacardi 151 in it so don’t let it fool you. LOL And, it’s only $4…cheapest mixed drink I seen in awhile!

Hokie, that’s why I like to recommend Cypress Inn, especially when it’s a family lunch. The kids probably don’t usually get there, although I think it would be an excellent place for a “special date”.

Mom2ck, I saw a link on Nicks and did some reading up on it. The Nicodemus sounds strangely familiar, very much like my grandfather’s lunchtime drink. He always had a good nap afterwards. But, I digress . . .

Good to know about Nicks in the Sticks, M2CK! D’s last exam is over at 10:30 on Wednesday so I was thinking about going there for lunch after I pick her up. I will NOT be having a Nicodemus though as that would make for an interesting ride back to Nashville…
