I wondered if anyone knew when the Capstone Scholars acceptances will be sent. Also...do students who are NOT selected receive any kind of notification?

thumper1, I received my acceptance yesterday the 4th. I live in columbia so it might depend on your location. If it dosen't come by tomorrow or tuesday then there might not be an acceptance. Students who are not notified do not get a notification. Good luck though. Capstone is without a doubt the best freshman dorm with great study abroad opprotunities.

Would you be willing to share your stats with us?? Did you receive one of USC's scholarships also?? My daughter received a McKissick Scholarship and we are so hoping she gets into Capstone Scholars. But we are not holding our breath!!

My stats are:
GPA: 4.48
ACT: 27
Rank: 5 of 48

I received the University Scholars Award which is only $1500 but im also getting a state scholarship called the Life Scholarship which gives $5000 so i have close to full tuition paid. The McKissick scholarship is for non SC residents only so I'm assuming you are out of state. Capstone Scholars was 50% out of state in its first year which was 2005-2006. I think this may make it very competitive for OOS students because it is probably used to lure the best to the university. What is your daughter's stats?

Congratulations !
Thumper1 - hopefully we OOS 'ers will get some good news Monday or Tuesday. We are holding off on the housing deposit because D wants Capstone.

DD got the McKissick. CR/Math SAT was 1230. GPA 3.87, Class rank 8/194. She's hoping that all the tippy top kids got into the honors college (which she DID that application for). However, truthfully we were surprised that she received the McKissick Scholarship...so...But I think PJben's ACT and DD's SAT scores are comparable...We're not holding our breaths here. But we would love it if she got into Capstone.

I would expect an invitation...... especially if that GPA is unweighted

My daughter received the Capstone invitation in today's mail. It doesn't seem to provide any more merit $ than the McKissick. I don't really recall our tour guide telling us that much about it. Do you have to live in the Capstone dorm?

Envelope in the Mail from USC...D doesn't get home until very late today.....dying to open it....

No, she dosen't have to. I strongly recommend staying in Capstone being that I am familiar with freshman dorms because I live in Columbia. Capstone has nice suite style rooms where a bathroom is located between two rooms, so four people share a bathroom instead of the whole hall. Some honors freshmen even prefer Capstone over Maxcy(honors dorm on the horseshoe).
Go to www.housing.sc.edu and click on virtual tour to view the freshmen centers.

D just called her mom and when told about envelope asked mom to open it; she was invited to join Capstone Scholars!.....no mention of any additional money.

I just visited the U last week with my S for the McNair interview.Saw Capstone firsthand and would recommend it highly for a freshman dorm. Its modern, bright and airy, has its own dining hall.I liked the location on the campus and I bet the rooms have great views (we were in the revolving restaurant on the top with great views). In fact I liked it better than Maxcy where my S would probably live.
The restaurant upstairs is open to the public for Sunday brunch only and has its own entrance and elevator. To get to the student part of the building required passing through another door (carded) and an entrance desk (manned).Theres another big freshman dorm right next door (Columbia) and its right next to the Business building.

My D got her invitation today as well. She is very happy! According to the Capstone pages on the website, there is no additional $$ involved. We are excited about the additional guidance and opportunities, as well as dorm selection. My D checked out Capstone on our visit and liked it. The students living there were very friendly and it seemed like a happy place.

Congratulations to all of you who have gotten into Capstone Scholars. It sounds like a great opportunity. We received an info brochure regarding orientation, etc. to the parents from USC in the mail today. We still haven't heard a word about the scholars day (even though we can't attend...). Capstone was a long shot....but oh well. McKissick still is a nice thing for DD to consider.

thumper
dont give up hope yet...give the mail another day and then call!!Everyone there is so friendly and helpful..have them review D's credentials.

thumper1

I agree with cathymee....give the mail another day then talk to them because you know as well as I do that some people are going to turn down the Capstone invitation....if they knew they could improve yield and get another stellar OOS student I am sure they would review.

I'm not sure I can get my daughter to make a call...would it be alright if I call...?

Thumper1
I would give the mail another day or two. From what I have read they accept 300 into Honors and 500 into Capstone. I remember reading somewhere that there were approx 750 university scholarships, so I would say that your D is probably getting an invitation based on the McKissick she got. Just mo. I think her stats are comparable to others invited. I am still keeping fingers crossed for her - please let us know.

cathymee, thanks for the info. The tour guide we had wasn't really very good plus we toured during one of the open houses last fall and since there was a huge group of parents and kids on our tour, we had trouble hearing what he was saying.

Thumper1, I would definately call. From your earlier posts, it seems that your daughter has better stats than mine does. Maybe it has to do with majors? Anyway, since she does seem like she meets the criteria and some people will not be attending the school, she might be invited at a later date.

This is the only school that has offered any merit aid to my d other than our own state university that she could free tuition at. However, it is not her 1st choice, probably #3 or 4.
