Capstone

Capstone invite today in VA.

I got the invite today in PA!!!

S got it today in NJ!!!
We cannot quite figure out what Capstone gets you. My son did read up stuff on their website, but it still seems a little vague. Would be fantastic if it got you priority registration for classes.

Essentially,it gives you a smaller, enriched community on a larger campus. It gives its own series of events, special sections of the University 101 class, its own living arrangement, some special sections of required English, summer abroad opportunity with the chance to compete for summer scholarship $$ to pay for it,etc. They have their own advisement ,which always helps.I dont recollect hearing that they receive any priority for registering.
Anytime you can "shrink" a large campus is a good thing, while still having all the benefits the large campus provides.
Approx 50% of the kids will be OOS,so that may make OOS students feel a little more comfortable.Capstone is a nice dorm, with large rooms and its own dining hall. And the unspoken understanding that maybe the students in the program are a little more serious about their studies, making the dorm a little less wild.

Thank you cathymee, we did read that online. Is your D in Honors? Do you or anyone else know what the requirements are for continuing in Capstone Soph. year. Like a GPA?

I don't recall seeing anything about guidelines to continue Capstone second year, but I will tell you that it gives the students priority housing second year in an apartment style dorm. I am pretty sure they are housed in a particular section of the dorm.
There was no priority registration, but some nice percs are included. I know my daughter has enjoyed getting free tickets to shows that tour ( I think she just saw Mamma Mia? ). The fact that Capstone is around 50% OOS was a plus because she thought it would help with the adjustment when many people are looking for friends rather than hanging out with their high school friends. Now that she is settled she actually has made best friends with a lot of South Carolina girls, but has friends from all over.
Congrats!

I have a S in Honors but he has lots of friends in Capstone.

In discussions with admissions folks last year, the Capstone program grew out of the fact that USC realized that many of the outstanding applicants they were getting failed to matriculate when they didn't get into the Honors Program. Two years ago they looked at finding another way to attract these higher achievers and came up with Capstone. They had no idea how well it would be recieved and originally thought it might yield 250-300 more students that they might have otherwise lost. They were quite surpised when the initial response was a little over 500 students who accepted the invitation the first year. This past year they achieved about the same results. Since this current year is only the second year of the program they are still learning about and investigating how to continue to enrich the experience beyond sophomore year.

Just living in Capstone is a plus, the rooms are quite large and share a bath with the room next door. I won't repeat what others have said but the approx 50% OOS make-up really helps with the adjustment. It is designed to be a living/learning community that as cathymee said creates a smaller more homogenous group within the context of a larger school. There are weekly events like movies, lectures, and other gatherings that are designated for Capstones as well as the free tickets and events which are a really nice perk.

I do believe that D got a letter that not only gave them priority housing for next year in the apartment stye dorm that PAmom mentioned but also gave them priority sign-up for the dorm which was on a first-come-first-served basis. They literally filled the dorm from the first floor up so the earlier you got there to sign your new contract, the lower your floor. You could also go with other friends and have rooms next to or near each other. D already actually knows the room she will be in next year.

There is a Capstone meeting at Scholars day which, with a little planning, can be a way to meet up with other CCers. PAmom and and her D met up with us last year, we spent the day together and the girls ended up rooming together, which incidentally has worked out well.

The mule that brings the mail from Columbia to Boise finally got here with an invitation to Capstone for my D. We are very happy and going to visit in late March.

If it's a slow mule that still has to cross the Cascades, I guess we can still hold out some hope here in Seattle. Nothing today. Capstone would have definately tipped the scales in favor of USC. Guess we might be still sitting on the fence through March.

AFA007 - After waiting for college letters nothing would surprise me about the mail. I saw that your daughter got a McKissick and think that she would surely get a Capstone invite. Good luck.
