Car/Cab Service from UVA to Regional Airports

For OOS students traveling during breaks that require more flexible transportation to/from Richmond airport than provided by the UVAirBus, does anyone have experience with car/cab services that offer reasonable flat rate transportation? If so, do they typically provide student discounts? Thanks!

Look into HomeRide, but you’d have to take a cab once in Richmond
There should be other students going that way, your student could probably ask around or post to student boards

Each class has a FB page and a lot of communication re selling books, rides, lost phones/ids/keys, etc, goes on here. I’d encourage her to see about getting a ride with another student headed that way, then the return, in exchange for some gas $ (far less then car or cab svc).

You could also post the dates here, without too much detail, in case any cc parents are making the drive and could help out. There have been several breaks that I’ve had a few extra students in the SUV. I’m making the trip anyway so I never mind. They have always been very appreciative. I enjoy hearing the chit-chat and often learn things I probably wouldn’t otherwise. ;)

There is also Greyhound bus service a couple times a day from downtown Cville to downtown Richmond. I imagine a person can take Richmond public transit to the airport from the bus station. There is a free trolley service on most days from the main parts of UVa to Downtown Cville.

Thanks for the quick replies! Unfortunately, the flights that are convenient and affordable don’t always align with the UVAirBus and Home Ride schedules without having her camp out at the airport for several hours. I actually looked into Greyhound. However, having to go from cab to bus to cab to return seems like a major inconvenience. I don’t mind paying for door-to-door service to know she’ll arrive safely. There are several car services that cost approximately $100 so I was curious if anyone else has used one of them. I’ll definitely have DD check the FB page to see if there’s an opportunity to catch a ride. Thanks again for the wisdom and insight!

We live ~20 hours away, and when our D first started UVA in 2010, I presumed flights into Richmond or DC would be considerably cheaper…rarely. At least from our location, RT to Charlottesville is actually more affordable than Richmond by about $50. The convenience of not having to find transportation (or parking if she drove her car) into Richmond or DC is nice too. She’s been traveling extensively this semester for med school interviews and is adamant all flights leave out of CVille because it’s more convenient, and she has an extra hour in the air to study.
