car for 17 y.o.

Smart Car a good choice for teens? Hmm...let's see. Teens get into more accidents than any other age of driver. Now look at the Smart Car's size. Sure, it's easier for parking and stuff, but what about when it has to go on the highway with a bunch of SUVs and Pick-ups that are going 70 MPH?
Good choice for teens? I don't know...

good call Kafka.

why do teens get into more accidents?
1. LESS experience
2. chatting with friends and getting distracted
3. a lot of them drive drunk

well I don't need to use the freeway for anything, my school is 3 minutes away...tons of friends can't fit into Smart cars...and I don't drink...
in a 20mph school zone, I wouldn't get into highspeed crashes, and for small accidents like side-swiping or creating dents in other cars during parking at school, there will be fewer accidents in that part.

of course if you DO need to use freeways, a normal sized car is safer...

get a moped.

epic22

Honda Civics rock!

Also, do not laugh, a sturdy pick up truck with good gas mileage will last you a long time.

I love my '97 Toyota Camry.

There are TONS of them (most sold car of '97), and they're great cars. I got mine for 3.5k. Look into some used ones for sale near you.

williamsf1, not all accidents are your fault. If a bad teen is driving it only increases the likelihood of an accident occuring - it can be the fault of the SUV driver, too. My point was that the chances are higher, and therefore Smart car may not be a good choice since no one could survive that sort of crash.
Additionally, while you may not be among them, there are teens who do those three things. In fact many/most of them do. Thus, the Smart car is not a good fit for teens [in general]. Was the topic whether or not the Smart car would be a good fit for you, or for teens in general? I was under the impression that is was for teens in general.

what about a cavalier? i just bought a 2000 2 door cavalier for 3,500 with onjly 60,000 miles on it. i had a 96 escort before that and i hated that escort, but i love the cavalier. You should seriously consider it, its a great little car

Also, williamsf1, teens tend to underestimate both their speed and the damage that the speed would inflict. I don't know of a single teenager (and I know very few adults) who actually drive 20 mph anywhere, including a school zone. Most drive down the street at 35-40 in our quiet suburb, and much damage can be done to property and person at that speed.

And the vast majority of serious or fatal accidents do not occur on highways but within 20 miles of home.

Smart Cars may be cool, but they are not safe.

Escalade hands down. It's cheap, low gas mileage, and very safe!

Seeing as you live in atlanta, a honda civic is a good choice. I personally hate my honda civic in the winter. A half inch of snow makes driving an adventure.

Get some kind of SUV...they are sexier than sedans or compacts...

or a compact suv (Forester)

I have an 05 Altima. Great, great car. Everything a teen could want in a car. Nissans, Toyotas, Hondas are all top notch
