Car insurance if I'm leaving car at home.

So I will be leaving for college in about 3 weeks and the car I will drive will stay here. The car is owned and insured only by my parents since I rarely drive it. Now that I will be at college I won’t drive it period but once I’m back for breaks I will be driving the car more to a summer job. What I wanted to know was whether I need to be reported as a licensed driver and have the premiums go up if I won’t be driving the car during college and will only be using it during breaks? Will I be covered once I’m here since I will technically only be borrowing the car?

You (or your parents) need to contact your insurance company to ask about placing your car “in storage”. In our case, we were not able to use that feature because we also have an umbrella policy. (Have no idea why, but that was the explanation given.)

Most insurance companies offer a discount if an covered driver goes to a school that is X miles away. Another option might be to drop coverage during the school year if the insurance company allows it. In that case, you will not be covered if driving your parent’s car. If this is a car that only you drive, then removing the car from the policy might be an option.

Ever policy has different rules so you need to check with the company directly. I can almost guarantee you that you will not be covered if you “borrow” the car. I am sure that there is some sort of clause that says that if you live under the same roof then you are only covered if you are a listed driver. Otherwise why would anybody buy insurance for their wife or children?
