Car on Campus: Registration, Insurance?

So Junior called my bluff, racking up a 4.0 GPA his sophomore year, and now I have to live up to my end and get him a vehicle.

His school is 1,000 miles away in a somewhat urban setting. Here are my questions:

1) Registration; Our home state or that of his college?

2) Insurance: Is there any reason to get him a separate policy in his locale or do we add to our policy?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would register the car in the state of legal residence of the person(s) listed on the title. Many dependent students keep their legal address at their parent(s) address for voting, driver’s liscense purposes, etc; though I know that isn’t always the case.

Call your insurance agent and see which kind of policy is cheaper. He or she would know the laws in your state and if that affects which way to do it. Sometimes it is cheaper to have all cars on the same policy (multiple car discounts), though maybe not always and sometimes there are other compelling reasons to have it separate. (ie maybe they have to be separate policies if the car is only in your kids name and the insurance is only in your name)

S has his own car, listed in my name. He doesn’t bring it to school. Anyway, insurance company gave me quote for having S’s own the car vs me or H. Insurance on car in S’s name would have cost about $1000 more per year, so he is listed as primary driver but is not the owner. I suggest calling your insurance company.

Our S kept his legal residence same as ours while in undergrad (instate) and grad (out of state). Drove a car registered in my name and insured on our auto policy.
I checked with insurance company to make sure this was all legit in our state.

MUCH cheaper for us to do it this way. If I had transferred the car reg into his name and had him get his own policy, cost would have been astromically higher. Especially for a young male driver, even with a clean driving record.

Ditto musicmom. S who is 25 still has car and insurance in H’s name. He will start his first real job in July. The cost to put the car and insurance policy in his name while under age 25 was unbelievable.

Eggbert = Does your S know where he will park the car at school? Before you go ahead and invest in one, you may want to confirm he has a safe place to park it.
