Car?

I live in CA and a car for me is important as a means of transportation and I simply like to have it.

Is it possible (or practical) to have a car as a student at NYU, given that everything you need is either in walking distance or accessible from the subway?

I suppose this is more of a New York City question in general.

Most adults living in NYC don't drive cars. No you wont ever need a car at NYU. You'll end up just taking cabs when subway's aren't convenient.

Just to reiterate what Last2AcntsBanned said, you won't ever need a car at NYU, or even in NYC for that matter, as it's very impractical, not to mention extremely difficult driving in NYC. The public transportation in NYC is amazing, and most New Yorkers take public transportation versus drive in their cars. The MTA (both subway and buses) is convenient, efficient, relatively safe, and easy to use.

I always hear stories about people who just moved to NYC dead-set on keeping their cars. After driving around the block for four or five hours trying to find a parking spot, they decide to just give the damn thing away - but even THAT was tough because everyone else in NYC knows better!

driving in NYC is absolute tortue, in my opinion, it'll cause more stress than convenience.

no. you'll waste money and develop an awful case of road rage.

I suppose the best choice is to sell it and just use the money as reassurance to my parents that I'll be able to afford plane tickets every six months.

Hah.

There is NO possible, practical, OR affordable way to keep and drive a car in Manhattan.

This is also addressed in another thread:

NYC is not CA...we live in the suburbs and never drive into the city - we always take the train.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO NYU!!! You'll never need to use it, nor will you want to once you see what kind of drivers and traffic you'd have to deal with.

monthly parking in Manhattan costs more than my mortgage.

the only person I know in Manhattan with a car in my really rich uncle and when you are worth multi-millions, the cost of parking is not important. btw, my uncle doesn't share any of his money with family and he lives practically on the NYU campus

DON'T SELL IT. I made that mistake too, not thinking ahead into the future. Then, when I came home for a month during christmas I thought to myself "what an idiot, now i have no way of getting around". I live in TX, so a car is pretty mandatory. It was the biggest mistake because we had to do the whole car hunt thing again this summer before I came home. Just think ahead....unless you never plan on going home again...DO NOT SELL.

I know one rich kid in Stern who has a car, girls are quite impressed by it.

It's possible to have a car, but you will never use it and will pay a lot to park it(assuming you would put it in a parking garage of some sort, good luck finding street parking everyday if not).

If you guys saw the nytimes, a parking spot in the city went for 250,000$ at some condo. If you decide not to spend upwards of 20$ a day for parking and park for free on the street, you'll be moving your car very often for the street cleaning rules.

the only people who have cars at nyu live in ny..and even they don't dare to drive them to downtown manhattan.

I know someone at NYU with a $140,000 Mercedes. And know of another euro student with a Ferrari here.

You wont really need it every single day, being a student at NYU, but if you have $$$ then a car is good to have, especially for going out late at night and weekends. Just find a parking garage in distance. 30% of people who live in Manhattan have cars, but just be prepared for the "expensive" monthly parking rates. I use the term loosely, because some people can afford it, some can't.

And as a NYer, some people are really exaggerating. Driving is easy if you are here for a while. Many people do it.

when I was in Manhattan a few weeks ago, I looked at the rates on the parking garages. Expect to pay around $500 or more per month. Ouch.

I have one.
