Car?

Should I bring it? If I can't, am I screwed?

at least when i was accepted, froshes were allowed to have cars…not sure how it is now, definitely talk to the university…it is a few miles from greater winston-salem, but it is hard to get around

I don’t think freshmen will be allowed to bring their cars in this coming year, and I’m actually really happy about this. Sophomores, I think, will need to park in freshman parking, which will really relieve some of the on-campus congestion. Freshmen don’t really need their cars. They’re nice to have, but you’ll only REALLY need them a couple of times. Older people (even your RA) can take you on a quick shopping trip or off campus to do whatever you need to do. Taxis are reallllly cheap here. I can honestly say that I ‘really needed’ a car here one time so far (to visit a friend who got really sick and needed to be taken to the hospital – I had to bring her clothes and whatnot). Otherwise, it’s not necessary. An older friend (and you will absolutely have some since a LOT of classes here are mixed freshmen/sophomores, especially divisionals) will be able to take you wherever you need to go.

I’m guessing that they will let freshmen have cars. $500 x a bunch of freshmen cars is a lot of money to turn down.

If I were an incoming student, though, I’d probably join zipcar instead. If I understand correctly, it costs $40 to join and then $8 per hour to drive (including gas and insurance). If you split that fee up amongst a few passengers, it’s very affordable. And it looks like the zipcars have permanent parking spots right in front of the freshmen dorms.
