I have been fascinated with being cardiac surgeon for the longest now, I find the heart to be interesting, it makes me jubilous just to see a diagram of the heart. But I would like to know how much does a cardiac surgeon make? how long are they in school?

4 years undergrad + 4 years med + an extra long residency..Im not sure on the exact numbers...but you would be rich if you were a cardiac surgeon.

okay thanks

how long in school? practically your whole life, or most of it.

I believe its probably 5-6 year residency so about 14 yrs...I think if its longer (the residency) the 14+ years.

I think just because you like a picture of the heart, doesn't mean you have to be a cardiac surgeon, unless you REALLY want to be one. If you're willing to waste your whole life until you're like in your 30s (no wife no kids; true you could have one, but it wasn't fare well) for something, then go for it. I wouldn't, even if I could do it.

well thats fine with me.

I want to be a cardiac because I want to be.

I was just using the diagram of the heart as an example of how much I like the heart.

Cardiac is usually a complete general surgery residency (5 or 6 yrs) plus 2yrs fellowship. Add another year if you want to do peds hearts.

A Cardiothoracic Surgeon that I shadowed for a week did 6 yr BA/MD program at BC, then 10 yrs of residency including fellowship....so after HS thats 16 years, and thats with the 6 yr program...add 2 years for normal people lol...4+4+10 = 18 years...you'll be like 36 years old before you actually start practicing, wow....haha...and i might actually do it cause surgery is saweeet

You get paid during your residency..don't forget that.

Like 40 grand a year. Pay med school bills and other bills off that, good luck. Also CT surgeons are less needed nowadays since many Cardiologists do procedures that CT's used to have to do. There is also less of a need for open heart surgery nowadays, in fact they are perfecting a method of replacing valves using veins to go the heart, instead of opening up the chest cavity. Things are changing in CT very quickly. Tons of them who are finishing their residency now can not find jobs, since there are too many of them. In the future since there is less of a need for them their salaries will go down quite a bit.

well that helps me with how long I would be in school, but exactly how much do they make?

Obviously a lot (like 250, 000+), but subtract loans etc. And yes after that you'll have a lot of money, but do you personally think it's worth it to waste your life? Your call, not mine. I wouldn't.

They make a lot, for now.... But once things change more it wont be the case they will probably average about 250 grand then. But hours are brutal for CT surgeons, considering how long one surgery can take, in addition to rounding, being on call, etc etc etc. It adds up, and CT requires about 60-80 hours a week for a practicing surgeon who truly cares. Thats a lot of time, and it leads to many family issues for such surgeons.

I appreciate your opinion but as stated before its not wasting my life because I'm saving lives!!!!!!!

I'm replying to a statment that Glucose101 made earlier.

um......ok

Ummm....ya....you're saving other lives, but you're wasting your families and your own.
