Yay, another UC transfer! Hmmm, one of my ucb transfer friends said he disagreed with some of the things I said in my post. If you have any points of contention or you have anything to add that you've gathered after transfering, just feel free to post about it! :)

I ended up scraping the following essay at the advice of my ucla friends. Looking at it, I am very glad I did; the essay is basically a rambling rant against the stereotypical college student filled with pretentious elitism to boot. Oh wells, hope this gives you an idea of what NOT to do in the personal statements

With the intertwining of career ambitions into the academic process, humility in the classroom comes in short supply these days. Most individuals are all too eager to prove their superiority amongst their fellow classmates by striving to attain the highest test scores of the class, making sure to put their articulate two cents into a discussion, or going out of their way to impress the professor. While these behaviors are certainly not wrong, the thinking underlining these actions that views the academic process as a win or lose competition definitely marks a significant error in judgment. Although I recognize the uplifting component of competition, I do not let it define my academic endeavor as so many people have. Instead, I act in every classroom as though only the professor and me are there. As such, I do not delight in my fellow classmates failures as I have so often seen others do. I solely focus upon maximizing my own knowledge of the material at hand and fulfilling my own potential. This academic philosophy has proved me well throughout my community college stay and I know if I maintain this perspective it will bring me success wherever I go. I hold absolute faith in this ideology for I recognize the fact that success in life is not based on a curve. My aim of publishing fiction novels, for example, does not hinge on the utter failure of other aspiring writers. Instead, my dream of seeing my name in big and bold across a hardcover solely rests on my skill, my dedication and my understanding. In short, I believe I am a throwback to an era when students sought college as a facilitator of wisdom, worlds apart from the current view of college as a way to distinguish oneself from others in the employment pool.

CardinalFocused, the word "final" suggests that you are leaving CC? I have seen many of us transfers of 2006 leaving already, may be i won't be visiting this forum that much either.

Anyways, good work there for all the advices for new transfers. Oh yeah, you have chosen UCB and NOT UCLA, shame on you! J/K... GOOD LUCK in UCB!

Besides, I suggest the administrator: Please PUT THIS AS STICKY TOPIC! This consists of many great advices!
