Cardinal’s Final Advice for UCLA/UCB Transfers

I am an international student applying to Haas and I have 2 questions:

1) Do I have to send high school transcripts, public exam result (which I have no chance to tell UCB my result in the online application), financial proof right after I submitted the application online? I have not received any instruction to do so. But on their website they said all materials should be received before 30th Nov. So should I send them or not?

2) I think I am going to complete only 6 breadth courses out of the 9 that Haas requests. And I will finish all prerequisite except Computer Science. My GPA is around 3.9 and I think I wrote a excellent personal statement. Do I still have chance to get accepted?

2) Nojsadlkdsajf;

cardinal, i like both majors equally, because their really similar. if i had to choose between math or history, that would require me really looking into what i'd like to do in life. so what do the uc's look at? do they look only at the result (major requirements completed) or ur circumstances (some major requirement courses not offered (and i live like 100 miles away from the nearest college besides the one i go to)) also. is major requirements really that important for un-impacted courses? isn't igetc more important for non math/science majors?
dhl, i go to mt. san jacinto college (the menifee campus)

when u look at assist.org and see some of the major requirements, the not-too- decent uc's have more requirements for art history than ucla. does that mean it's harder to be admitted to these schools?

What's ur screen name for AIM?

I wanna add u

In response to leowong1: No.

In response to sauronvoldemort:
Looking at the information you provided, you are missing 2 two courses for art history, and looking at assist.org, you are missing a course in "Introduction to Historical Practice" for history as it is not offered at Mt. Jacinto. 2 missing for art history/1 missing for history. So either way you're going to be missing classes.

This is of small significance though since you have completed IGETC and TAP. Having those two combined gives you double priority, and with a 3.5 GPA, you are right at the average. I really think you're for sure in, provided you do well in your essays. It also helps that you are able to choose either art history or history as alternates; this doubles your chances of getting into UCLA.

Solution: If you really can't choose, just put a blindfold over your eyes and pick one. Then choose the other one as an alternate choice. Keep your grades above 3.5, and everything should be fine.

sauronvaldemont,

one of the main advantages of TAP is that it allows you to be considered for both majors you put down on your application, which I assume will be History & Art History. IMO, choose the one that you see yourself doing in the long run. Like Card said, you shouldn't try choose a major according to how well your chances are of being admitted to it.

So Pellman, does that mean it's technically possible for sauronvoldemort to be accepted into both Art History/History?

From what a UCLA counselor told me, you get considered for your first major; if you get rejected from that, they consider you for your second major. So if you're pretty well qualified for one, or both of your majors, it's pretty inconceivable that you'll be rejected.

Does UCB ever consider exception xfers. I will be 15-20 creds short of the 60 cred min for this '07 xfer term, and I was wondering if I had a chance of being considered if I apply for exception. I am not yet a California resident and have been unable to pay for more than a few classes at a time at the local CC (though I will be a res in spring '07). I am supporting myself while trying to pay off a past school debt. I am also trying to xfer soon so I can defer my govt. student loans until I graduate. My application is pretty solid and I think I would have a good chance of acceptance if not for the credit discrepency. Is it worth it to send in my application. I have tried to talk to the xfer center @ CAL and they only tell me that under extreme conditions does CAL accept exception, but they do not say anything about my situation or chances of even being considered. Anyone have any advice that is more than "Berkeley only accepts exception under very serious circumstances such as a death in the family or illness"? I know that financial problems is not as serious as a death, but is is serious enough to be considered? Thanks for any help.

Emir.Yasin, "If you think you qualify for Admission by Exception, contact the Admissions Office at the campus you wish to attend."

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/exception.html

I have talked to the admissions office at UCB but they keep giving me non-answers. They completely ignore my specific situation and say that exceptions are rare. They don't tell whether or not financial problems are even acceptable to be considered for exception. I am still planning to apply to see what happens but I was only wondering if anyone knew anything about that policy and what conditions are acceptable.

Thanks for your help, SkWz.

They're probably implying that its difficult if not impossible to transfer with exception for other than the reasons specified.

Dang, I was thinking that if he was art history and history simultaneously, he'd have the flexibility of choosing later on. Oh well.

does uc's have anything against people taking 5 or 6 classes in the last spring semestre (to complete unit minimum)?
also i read in the back of igetc form that those who were eligible for uc for freshman application doe NOT have to complete the minimum 60 units.

this is my course history at ccc:
fall 2006 (in progress) expected gpa: 3.75 or 4.0
honors freshman composition
honors world history to 1500
latin american history
french 101

spring 2007(planned)
honors critical thinking and writing
astronomy
honors topics in biology
french 102
honors intro to modernism

ap:
euro 3
us hist 5
art hist 5 (fulfills two western art course requirements for ucla art hist)
psych 5
stat 3

art history major req.: two western art, two non-western art
history major req.: too complicated to list, but completed
now i will ask again, what major should i choose, art history or history as my first choice?

What are you seeking to gain by asking strangers what your course of life should be for the next 2 years? Sure, anyone could say choose History because it's easy, or because it's more interesting than Art History, or for any X reason.

The truth is, unless someone truly knows you here, you won't get a real answer because our opinions will be based on our own unique experiences. If you don't know this, then maybe you should do yourself a favor and do some introspection. Find yourself. Find your hobbies and interests. Go to the library and get art history books and history books. If you can't choose, go find alternative paths; double majors do exist.

I hope this doesn't sound scathing, but the truth is, your post is like me asking a completely random stranger whether I should eat a chicken taco or a beef taco.

i personally prefer beef taco, but everyone has their own preference.

wow if you need that much guidance, to the point of asking complete strangers to choose your path, then you probably aren't ready to transfer yet...

in a bad mood..my power went out a few hours ago the second i began studying for my statistics test, i just got home from the library

Fedex's ilovecalifornia a taco :/

ilovecali, i'll be taking statistics for the winter.

how's the course? ;)

I heard you get to do lot with e and bell curve and permutations and all those good stuff. definitely easier than calculus.
