Career fairs

I've got to admit, Iowa State's career fair program is insane.

@ Illinois State, if you want an internship, you have to find it yourself

@ Iowa State, 280+ companies ready to take your resume and interview you

got 6 interviews with some offering coops of 40k, sure does help pay for school and get connections

Wow! Our D is just a freshman and she attended. She said the opportunities are fantastic! She’s so glad she chose Iowa State. She may have something this summer. As parents, we are beyond thrilled. Good luck to you!!!

in engineering? impressive, normally they dont take in any freshman except for john deere and caterpillar. They kind of assume freshman will just switch out of their major which a lot do.

even as sophomores its a bit hard. My friend who has a 3.72 gpa and in all these leadership positions never got an interview. My roommate has a 3.8 and he only got an internship because i introduced him to one of the representatives i was friends with

then again getting an interview is all about selling yourself and showing that you are the best guy/girl for the job. I admit my GPA never hit any of their requirements yet they made exceptions for me because of people skills

ISU has been great for my son in so many ways. He landed research job during his freshman year. Also, had an internship the following summer. He’s continuing doing research now in his sophomore year. I don’t think many places can match the opportunities available at ISU.

Help! It has been a whirlwind last couple of weeks. D is now in the second round of interviews for internships. However, they are all out of town. How does an 18 year old get to these meetings without me driving over the river and through the woods to make it happen?!

GLAW, that’s great news. Maybe she can call and work something out for the follow up interview(s)? Maybe they’ll agree to a phone interview?
Last year, my son only had interview(s) on campus for a internship out of state.

Also, hopefully she gets a internship with a company that provides convenient housing. My son’s company did not. We had to make our own housing and transportation arrangements. I lost my car for the entire summer, LOL. Good luck!

From experience, all you can really do is bite the bullet and either pay someone to use there car or get transportation some other way. Plant interviews are a bit more stressful, you typically have 10-20 students from all over the midwest with extremely competitive gpas/work experience/interview skills and not being able to get to the plant interview kind of tosses your name out of the race. Companies want to find any way possible to lower the amount of candidates, so expect any detail to possibly count against you.

which company was that by the way? A lot of companies kind of know this is a hassle so they generally hire specifically from one university, so lets say company XYZ wants 12 co ops, well they will take 2 from Illinois, 2 from iowa state, 2 from wisconsin, etc etc.

It sounds like they refine their list by any means necessary. She did manage to get into a carpool for her Des Moines interview. We are still working out the details for Minneapolis and Moline. It looks like planes, buses, and automobiles…can’t believe there isn’t any train service in the area.
