Career Guidance Services

They say there are over 1000 different professions in United States. Most of us will know handful of most sought out professions. Do you think hiring professional career guidance counselor will help in zeroing on the major which will be best suited based on your interests, personality, profiles? Has anyone used this and what is your take on this?

No experience, but I don’t think you should spend $$$ on this when there are many free or low cost resources available to you. In high school, your guidance counselor should be able to help, and in college your career center will definitely be able to help.
Also your state may have career centers which normally serve unemployed people but are available for anyone to get some career counseling and other services. Here is a website for the Massachusetts system:

There are lots of good books, you can borrow a few from the public library. My favorite because it short, concise and easy/fun to use is -
[10 Best College Majors for Your Personality: Laurence Shatkin: 9781593578633: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Best-College-Majors-Your-Personality/dp/1593578636)
The classic work is “What Color is Your Parachute”.
Use some of the free/low cost resources before you spend $$$ on a private counselor.

Are there any on-line resources? Web links where you can go and answer bunch of questions and it provides you some suggestions to ponder over?
