Career prospects for an IT major with a strong CS minor.

Hi everyone,

I’m going into my senior year as an Information Technology major. So far, I’ve enjoyed my courses in IT and I think I will enjoy working in the IT field. However, I fear that employers don’t respect the IT major as much as a CS degree.

To compensate for this, I’ve taken as many CS courses as time allows. This will mean I’ll be graduating as an IT major and CS minor. Do you think that this education (complimented by internships and certs) will allow me to compete in the work force?

As a frame of reference, here is a list of my fundamental courses in IT and CS:

IT-Database Management
IT-Networking
IT-Fundamentals of Java
IT-Web App Development
IT-System Analysis and Design
IT-Data Driven Web Apps
CS-Discrete Structures I and II
CS-Fundamentals of CS I and II
CS-Algorithm Design
CS-Data Structures
CS-Ethics

I appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

Can you also take the CS courses in operating systems, security, networks, and/or databases? Knowledge of these areas from the CS level may give you a better ability to learn new technologies and solve difficult problems while working in IT.

Don’t worry, you’ll be able to find a job with those classes. I actually think classes like Web App Development and Data-Drive Web Apps will be more valuable to an employer than many upper-level CS classes.

There are many IT related computer science courses such as networking, security, and database however I will not have time to take them before graduation. But I agree, these CS courses seemed more challenging and problem solving oriented.

Can you take the CS versions instead of the IT versions for the IT major?
