career questions

Basically, I am an IOE (industrial and operations) in the college of engineering at the university of micigan. I am thinking about pursuing finance or consulting (management/strategic consulting that is) for my career. I know those are really competitive fields.
Right now, I am sitting at a 3.6 GPA right now (junior standing, I kinda slacked off freshman year) and I was talking to a couple LSA kids at a career fair and they are all like 3.8 3.9s.. Engineering classes are supposed to be harder and the average gpas and stuff in engineering are much lower than LSA (I am pretty sure most of you know that) ..so my question is, will my lower gpa due to major negatively affect me?
Also, how does IOE from michigan place in consulting and finance?

I also have questions about grad school.. if consulting and finance are my career goals, what should I do?
There's a 5 year Master of IOE program (SGUS) which saves us a lot of trouble applying if our GPA is above 3.5 (it's almost an automatic in) ..but should I apply for master of financial engineering program instead? Or should i not even worry about grad school for now and just apply for an MBA program down the road? Is it possible to get into a top MBA program straight out of undergrad?

Thanks in advance

No, it's not likely to get into a top MBA program right out of college unless you've had some very significant business experience and success.

Management consulting firms hire from top schools. If you're at one you'll have a chance of getting a job right out of college. They do care about GPA, but other thing count too. They still are interested in kids with very high SAT scores, a personality conducive to client interaction and it very much helps if you've had a few internships relating to their business.

"Management consulting firms hire from top schools."
does michigan engineering cut it?

After graduation get a job with the following title; Assistant brand manager, buisness analyst, market analyst, strategy analyst.

Take the GMAT, socre 700+

Work for 2 years

Start applying, top 10 schools only.

Get accepted by 5 years out.

Attend

Intern at management consulting

Profit

my ****ty SAT score would haunt me

I know a few folks from UMich's IOE program - they are in finance. I think its a fairly common career path. I did IE (now called MS&E at my alma mater) and the VAST majority went straight to finance or consulting.

Its a good program that blends a lot of disciplines. Good luck!
