Career: Signal and Systems Conc. in EE

Hi, I am at a position where I can now chose between the various options available to me as an student of EE. I love MATLAB and the subjects that concern signal processing seems very easy to me, contradicting what many people have say about it.

I dont know where this leads me. I searched for terms within the course limits into monster job search and most results are finance based. So for those who are in the field, please help me understand the career significance of this concentration. If you can, tell me more about controls as well.

Thanks.

In my opinion, Signal Processing is a great specialization for an EE. Any industry job that involves Communications (Digital or Analog) involves Signal Processing. On the Digital side, there are a ton of applications. I’ll just name a few general applications of Signal Processing:

Radio applications, Radar, Sonar, Audio processing, Video processing, Wireless Comm., and also Digital Signal Processors are heavily used in certain applications, which would certainly benefit from a Signal Processing background.

The easiness of DSP/Comm subjects is going to depend on your instructor, but these subjects tend to be somewhat math intensive, and topics like Convolution for instance give a lot of students trouble (This will also depend how complicated the signals are that your instructor actually has you convolve :D)

Thanks for replying:

I was told the same by another graduate student. He said it depends on the student as to how hard the course load seems. MATLAB is a programming language so I thought this was more inclined towards CS, but CS is entirely different.

Actually, I don’t know if many CS students at my University even know what MATLAB is…

Basically the most powerful numerical calculator you could ever use, though.

If you haven’t already, take a Signals and Systems course (it’s probably required, anyway). If you enjoy it, I would recommend the concentration. I did my B.S. in Computer Engineering, but I am actually planning on doing my Masters in Signal Processing.

bumping this thread.

So Monster.com gives me this with " MATLAB " ( entry level)

Programmer/Analyst

Control Systems Engineer

Entry-Level Chemist ?

RF Engineer/Communications Engineer

NY and Experienced gives the following :

Quant Analyst, Consulting Svcs

Data Analyst

Quantitative Research - Optimizatio…

( almost all the postings by Morgan Stanley and eka finance want this )

What sucks is that a gpa lower than 3.7-.8 wont even land me an interview with these companies. I am now considering showing my EE/MA gpa of 3.77. Dont know if that will help.

What Financial Companies would want with a Control Systems Engineer, I have no idea.

I’ve heard of engineering companies wanting MATLAB experience; perhaps Monster.com isn’t the best source for a job search in Electrical Engineering.

Sorry I wasn’t clear, but when i did a search for experienced professionals, most of them were financial companies ( keeping in mind that MATLAB was the keyword).

Can you please suggest an alternative? Dice.com is mostly CS/Comp.E
