Careers in Equine Studies

I’m an Equine Studies major, probably one of the few on College Confidential, and I’m not quite sure what I’d like to do in the horse industry. I do know I want to work in the horse world though. My greatest issue is sustainability. The horse industry is vulnerable to shifts, and it is in no way known for high job placement rates. Very few people make it, and most people who do often lose everything. Success in the horse world is not common. In order to combat such difficult chances, I’m looking to pursue a more sustainable career with my degree, though I’m not sure what my options are. Being a veterinarian is a possibility, but it’s not a likely one because I’m visually impaired and lack the ability to drive for internships and volunteering opportunities. Would anyone have any other suggestions for me? I’ve considered also adding a biology minor to my major, but I’m not sure if it would open anymore career opportunities or not.

All the feed brands hire folks to work on all elements of equine nutrition - from the science to marketing. Pharma does the same for horse drugs. There are the companies that make gear for horse, rider, and barn - more marketing.

Show/Event management probably requires some connections to get into but is a year round thing.

While it’s hard to make a living in the barn (riding or teaching), it is a big business overall if you consider everything that touches it.
