can sumone pls list all the careers a person can have after med school?

bumppppppppppp

Well, there's being a physician... and then there's being a researcher...?

sry...its just that i no that i wanna be in the medical field but im worried that there is nothing that might interest me

That's a strange dilemma to have. How can you know you want to be in it, if you're not sure you'll find anything you like?

its just that there are so many specialties that i dont know which is right for me

So tell me - why do you want to be in medicine?

And now that I understand your question, I can actually answer it. I'll start compiling the list now.

Thank you.......................

Still, though - if you don't know that you'll find something you like, why do you want to be in medicine?

PS: My list is compiled. Without meaning to be patronizing, I'm interested to hear your answer to the question, first.

That's why you go to med school. No one is expecting you to settle on a speciality right now. Don't mind those HSers who have wanted to be neurosurgeons "ever since they were 5."

"Still, though - if you don't know that you'll find something you like, why do you want to be in medicine?"

Because i know i will have a good salary and because i want to become a doctor (i just dont know what kind).

Hopefully, that's not how you will answer that question during your med school interviews.

haha, definitely leave out the good salary part when you talk to other people.

And if you don't mind BlueDevil, i would really like to see the list you have compiled. I'm finishing high school right now, and i'm very interested in medical research, as well as possibly being a general physician. Optometry is also appealing to me for some reason lol. I want to go into medicine because whenever i hear reports like "researchers are making artificial body organs such as the bladder..."etc, i find myself SO intrigued by incredible things they're coming up with these days. I see myself in that lab setting, spending hours trying to find new ways to advance medicine.

anyways, i'm not completely set on a medical path, but i would like to see some of the ideas you have come up with
thanks.

freekobe, telling me that you want a career in medicine because you want to be a doctor is redundant.

Why?

Jakem, I don't have my list on this computer. I'll PM it to you when I get back to my room.

okay, thanks a lot.

"freekobe, telling me that you want a career in medicine because you want to be a doctor is redundant."

I want to be in medicine because biology and all that stuff really interest me plus i like helping people

I know you've got a lot of time left, but it sounds to me like the path to becoming a doctor will require a lot more searching on your part. Why not become a PhD, work sane hours, research biology, and find new drugs to help people?

Especially in the new era of medicine, with managed care and such, I think people who are into medicine for financial reasons are - my philosophical concerns aside - simply incorrect. Doctors don't make as much as they used to, and their salaries are likely to continue to fall. (My undergraduate education is/was as a health economist.)

Anyway, here's the list of specialties:

Anesthesiology
Emergency Medicine
Family Practice
Internal Medicine
Ob/Gyn
Orthopedic Surgery
Pediatrics
Psychiatry
Radiology
Surgery

Remember, many of these specialties can further subspecialize. Internal Medicine, for example, is what leads to cardiology, pulmonology, etc. But these are the residencies that one would apply for after med school.

Is it possible to combine two specialties or do you need to specialize in one and then specialize in the other?

For example, is it possible to specialize in Emergency Pediatrics or do I need to specialize in Pediatrics and then Emergency Medicine.

Or, can I just specialize in Emergency Medicine and work at a Children's Hospital or can I just specialize in Pediatrics and work in a Children's ER?

Thanks for your help.

In the particular case you are mentioning, I do not believe any combined programs exist. All four of the remaining options would, I think, work.

Go to med school first. Pick a specialty at the end of your third year. There's no rush.

In your opinion, what is the easiest/hardest specialty?
