Carleton 2023 RD

@packacards Chicago suburbs. I bet CA helps a little. Just like Chicago helps for schools out east. Not a huge bump though.

@homerdog yeah, I’m assuming location is low on the list of considerations. CA is so big, we’re kind of a dime a dozen anyway. Most of her schools are east, and so far the least amount of merit has come from a western school where I know CA kids make up a large part of the student body. Just trying to read the tea leaves! Haha

@packacards remember there’s no merit at Carleton. And yes we are all thinking about this all too much why we wait and wait …

@packacards we’re in Georgia…hoping that helps a little with the midwest and northeastern schools (which is most of the ones he applied to)

@packacards – We are in Arizona, and assume generally that that does not harm and likely (slightly) benefits our D19 with any of the LACs that are 1,000+ miles away she’s applying to, including Carleton.

Carleton published their Class of 2022 distribution – https://www.carleton.edu/admissions/apply/steps/profile/ – pretty much impossible to draw any conclusions because it’s enrolled students, not admitted students (nor applying students). But at 11.5%, their share of the freshman class almost matches their share of the overall population. (Which is different from, say, Arizona, which if it was based on population, should have maybe 11 freshmen, not 3.)

@BorgityBorg - thanks that’s super interesting! … if not a bit intimidating as the sample kids appear to be president of every club, captain of every team, have meaningfully contributed to research, cured a rare disease, and saved some endangered insect that we don’t even realize all of humanity hinges upon. : )

@packacards – yeah, I find those random profiles (Carleton isn’t the only one to highlight those sorts of incredible students) both inspiring (wow, those kids are incredible!) and a little deflating (hey, my daughter hasn’t cured a single type of cancer yet!). So I avoid them now…

I think back to my college days and I didn’t know anyone who had a resume like some of those kids… either I was oblivious to what others were spending their time on, or things have gotten so much more competitive. My daughter seems to be squarely on the bubble for Carleton (3.85 UW and 1400 SAT). She didn’t do any of the “expressing interest” extra things that I’m reading that some prospective students have been doing, though, because we were aware that there were other things to do beyond the visit. Guess we didn’t do the right research. Although, in the end, i would hope that they wouldn’t necessarily mark down students who didn’t think they needed to pester them just for the sake of pestering them. That seems pretty superficial.

@ProudWADad I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the stats and ECs of the kids on another school’s thread that I’ve got my eye on. It’s humbling. There are definitely superstars out there. Carleton admissions is holistic and I don’t think they expect a CA resident to visit. I wouldn’t worry about that.

@ProudWADad Carleton’s common data set claims they don’t consider level of interest in making decisions. If I remember right, that’s one reason we picked Grinnell over Carleton for a fall visit.

…and geographical residence is “considered” btw (the rankings are very important, important, considered, and not considered)…so perhaps a small bump for being from an underrepresented state or region.

oof I’m from Montana so I hope so

We are in Washington

not sure if that is underrepresented as Seattle is so large

@ProudWADad only 24 kids from WA last year, fewer than MN, IL, NY, CA, and nearly tied with TX. Personally I’d count WA as a plus! : )

I didn’t receive an email stating the March 22nd date for admit decisions. Did the emails go out to parents or just students? Our son doesn’t always communicate info to us. Carleton is definitely his first choice and we are so hopeful for him.

I just searched my in box and didn’t find the email so it looks like it just went to the applicants.

Would say that Carleton tends to accept students who have the potential to (work in a team that will) cure "a single type of cancer, rather than high school students who already have.

@CollegeGrad79 that’s good to hear! That gives me hope because I think S19 falls into that potential group. We will see if Carleton sees it. This time next week, we will all know!

Are there any actual applicants on this thread? Or just parents?
