Could you send me the link to the Facebook group?
DS got deferred, don’t think he knows yet. 2220 SAT superscore FWIW. Very depressed for him. think this means Carleton wants to see how many Ivy League rejects they get applying regular decision (instead of accepting kid whose heartfelt #1 choice is/was Carleton.)
I’m sorry, CA. If Carleton remains his no. 1, make sure he does all the things people say to do … let them know it’s his no. 1 and would attend if given admission, update them with new awards/accomplishments, etc.
This might be too soon, but I’ll put it out there anyway … A good friend’s dd was rejected from Carleton and was despondent. It was the one school where she felt completely at home. She ended up going to a CTCL school and triple majored. She’s now at a cc darling school getting a fully funded PhD. Carleton’s loss!
Accepted!!!
Youdon’tsay, what is a CTCL school? DS does have backups but will try to encourage giving the deferral the old college try (sorry couldn’t resist.) And re the facebook group for Carleton 2020 admits, I looked up one young woman, whose most recent posts include a bong video and multiple f-bombs. Really, Carleton? That’s who you admitted over my DS?
Just found out what the Facebook page is. It’s on the Check It Off sheet that they send you in the mail in your acceptance packet.
It’s the group of colleges known as Colleges That Change Lives. You can Google it. Great liberal arts colleges and universities that aren’t as selective but can be great nonetheless.
Can anyone post a link to the Carleton College Class of 2020 facebook page? Having trouble finding it, thanks.
The URL to it will be in your acceptance packet in the mail. Just got mine today. @Carlstudent20
Thanks YouDontSay. DS was actually pretty competitive for Carleton. I’m skeptical of the colleges that change lives since I know of kids who’ve gone to them - some have never gotten good jobs. Think it’s better at that point to go to good state university rather than pay full freight for third rate.
Hey @CAorBust –
Look, I know you’re angry that your kid didn’t get into Carleton on Early Decision 1 but we as a Carleton community really don’t like it when prospective parents judge current/future students based on their Facebook posts and then assert that their kid should have gotten in over them. Everyone at Carleton belongs at Carleton whether you think so or not.
CC doesn’t like when members post outside links, but this technically isn’t a link. The Facebook group for Class of 2020 is
/groups/carletoncollege2020official/
Well said, @thehangingtree. There’s a way to support your child in their deferrals/rejections that doesn’t malign other students or the admissions office. Colleges have gotten incredibly competitive and there are simply more qualified students than there are spots. If you’re going to maintain your sanity throughout the process you have to just accept that to some extent it can be a crapshoot. A deferral or rejection is NOT a reflection on your worth in comparison to another student, and it makes the entire process ten times more stressful if parents begin to say things like one student “deserves” an acceptance more than another. At Carleton we do not compare ourselves to one another, and we don’t cut each other down to make ourselves feel taller.
Also classifying the RD applicant pool as “Ivy League rejects” is just… Ugh. Totally missing the whole point of Carleton.
@carl2016 I really liked how you described the Carleton students. That’s exactly why my daughter chose this school. Super excited for her!
@carl2016 – you said it perfectly! (: Carls care about Carls/Carls help Carls/etc totally rings true.
For admitted students and deferred students and prospective students: Carleton is going to be the best time of your life and it’s going to be so much better if you see your peers as friends rather than competitors. Carleton’s community is so, so strong and a good part of it is because of the non-competitive atmosphere. That’s why so many students pick Carleton over other colleges – the friendly vibe the campus atmosphere has is just the best and very conducive for learning and having fun in general.
Hope to see you all on campus soon! For those still deciding on to Carleton/not to Carleton, I highly suggest doing an overnight stay with a current student to really get a feel for the Carleton community. You’ll probably feel smothered by how much everyone wants to say hi to you and get to know you and convince you to go to Carleton, but I hope you don’t mind.
^ It’s absolutely true! My daughter spent a night with the students in a class, the cafeteria, the library and their drom and she already called people in Carleton “my friends” when she tried to tell us her experience. It came out so natural she laughed at herself too.
@CAorBust I have plenty of friends who applied ED, were deferred, naturally felt heart-broken, then proceeded to get accepted, and are extremely happy at Carleton now. If it’s his number 1, do what other members have said (or don’t, I don’t know if it really helps at all). It’ll work itself out in the end. A deferral is not a rejection, far from it. Anyway, I’d love to see your DS on campus next year.
My bad - didn’t mean to imply that any admits don’t “deserve” to be at Carleton. Anyway FB group I saw was not the official one, so the sketchy profile likely not a Carleton student at all. Thanks for advice re deferrals. DS did spend time at Carleton and really enjoyed the people and atmosphere, that’s why he decided to apply ED. But there are so many good colleges out there. I do stand by my comment that colleges who defer qualified students (qualified in their opinion) are waiting to see what else comes their way, rather than simply admitting the qualified student who has made the commitment.
Wishing your DS all the best, CAorBust. I like to believe that things have a way of working out in the end. It is good that you can come to CC and vent…so that you can remain strong and positive and supportive of your applicant who needs it right now!
CONGRATS to all who were accepted! I was deferred by Carleton and was very upset in the past two days but now i am moving on! (And studying hard for midterm exams). Carleton is still my top choice, and I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some good advice on what to do for a deferred applicant. I really want to try my best to submit the additional materials to Carleton and possibly they would see a more comprehensive picture of me.
@irregularodradek – Aww, sorry about the deferral but I’m glad you’re having a move-forward positive attitude about it! If you didn’t interview for ED1, requesting an interview might be useful. Otherwise, definitely send in a letter of interest and just submit what you’re planning to submit. Good luck on finals!
