^^i love that you wrote enthusiasm.

Apathy (and anyone else who was waitlisted), I don't want to give false hope, BUT... my best friend applied to, among other schools, Washington University in St. Louis. She was waitlisted there, but when she called the admissions office to see if there was anything she could do, they told her that waitlisting was just their way of seeing who really cared about the school, and that if she paid the waitlist fee, she would be admitted immediately.

I don't know if Carleton shares this policy, but it might be worth a call.

Congrats to those who got in. I just received my admissions packet today. I'll post some quick stats so those who may come to this board in a year can "chance" themselves (it's not like the poor kids on here don't do enough of that already)

Again congrats to those who got in! And for those of you who didn't I can commiserate with you. I was rejected from one of my top schools in a SCEA decision in December. I was literally bawling when I got the email. College admissions are such a crapshoot. There's no such thing as being just "outstanding" anymore because it seems that it doesn't cut it. You could be feeding starving children in a third world country and you could still get rejected. I know it may seem hard to think about now but you will get in to an amazing college! You can't let this one slow you down from going on to achieve great things.

Don't let a bunch of old men and women in an admissions office get you down. You can get the most of your education as long as you aim to do so.

cheer up, smile, and when you enter college in the fall make the most of it!

accepted(i think). im not at home but my neighbor said i got a big envelope in the mail. do they big envelope rejections as well? hahah i live in socal

Accepted! For those still waiting, here are my stats I guess.

gender: male

Private school, but school does not compute a GPA

SAT: 2130
Taking IB, predicted grades: Math HL (7), Physics HL (6), Computer Science HL (6), Chinese B HL (6), Economics SL (7), English A1 SL (6/7)

Extra-curricular: Can't be bothered to type them all out sorry.

I believe the thing that most helped me were my teacher recommendations. I have known both of them for quite a long time and they both think quite highly of me!

Good luck to all still waiting!

what "waitlist fee??" i have never heard of such a thing.

I second the above. I was waitlisted last year at WU and there was no fee or anything guaranteeing admission.

Congrats all. I'm hoping Carleton will take a few transfers this year, but sadly, I have to wait until May.

accepted in socal! I'm really shocked, carleton was a reach.
2200 SAT
3.8 something gpa unweighted
Solid extracurriculars but nothing too amazing
I think my essays helped me though, I really liked them and worked hard on them

do u guys need FA,especially samedaytoday?cuz i m canadian permanent resident and need FA.

So I did some more poking around/interrogating of my Wash U-waitlisted friend, and here's what's up. I thought I'd let the "Ask the Dean" section from this website do the talking:

"Waitlisting seemingly overqualified applicants is a factor at some colleges, but being able to pinpoint which ones in particular participate in that ploy is very difficult. One school that has been relatively famous for this in recent years is Washington University in Saint Louis (WUSTL). WUSTL likes to see a sincere expression of interest from its applicants."

You can find the rest of this discussion on College Confidential, but this is basically what happened to my friend. When she called the WUSTL admissions office, they told her that if she paid a $1000 fee, she would be admitted to Wash U right away (she chose not to). So I guess crixx and carynw are right--it isn't really a waitlist fee, but rather a special kind of fee that applies to certain people on waitlists. I'm afraid I don't know anything else about it; I didn't apply to Wash U.

Again, though, I don't know if Carleton has this policy of waitlisting overqualified applicants, but it does seem that it might be worth a call.

Izzy, could the money have been the deposit?

Regarding Carleton's policy, I don't think they do this. Here's some helpful info from another thread on waitlisting from Maize&Blue:

"For historical waitlist data for the past 10 years, check the common data sets at https://apps.carleton.edu/campus/ira/CDS1/ . Sections C1 and C2 provide data on # applications, # admitted, # yield, # on waitlist, # admitted off waitlist. For entering fall 2007 class:
4840 applicants, 1444 admitted, 509 yield.
1368 offered place on waitlist, 306 accepted place on wl, 5 admitted from wl"

Ah, yes--deposit! Thank you; I'm really unskilled in the world of college admissions and navigations. Yes, she was given the option of paying the deposit and being guaranteed admission, because they wanted to make sure that Wash U wasn't her safety. If Carleton doesn't waitlist overqualified applicants, though, I guess that's not an option.

I don't mean to say that I know who Carleton waitlists and why, but it doesn't seem that the adcom follows this practice of waitlisting extremely qualified kids because they think Carleton is the kid's second choice.

Monv and Saerax: Go to Wellesley! You will become part of a community and tradition of amazing women on a gorgeous campus AND you will have an absolute blast as a student in Boston/Cambridge. (It is very easy to get to Boston from Wellesley, using the bus that goes to MIT.) If you are math/science types, don't forget that you can cross-register at MIT. Humanities at Wellesley are tops. Comparing this to four years in southern Illinois? Puh-lease!

My niece graduated from Wellesley in 2003 and because the school is so well-regarded and -recognized, doors have opened for her ever since. It's an amazing place--an absolutely gorgeous campus, first-rate academics, and a challenging yet nurturing environment for leaders of the future--which happen to be women. Can't do much better than that!

In regard to earlier posts: I'm not sure there is such a thing as an "overqualified applicant" to Carleton!

I assume that Carleton, like any other school who waitlists such a large number of applicants, has determined that the students they WL will be just as successful at Carleton as those they admit. There are just too many qualified applicants. I don't understand why admissions waitlists so many though when their yield of 35% has been very stable over the years and they've taken so few off the waitlist each year.

I agree! I started to write that word in my reply and had to back up, because I'm not sure there is such an animal. :)

Waitlisted---- 800 Verbal 770 Writing 670 Math

Oh well, I got accepted into Macalester, Smith, and Bennington (so I have choices) and am waiting on some others. Congrats to everyone who got in! :-)

Question, does anyone know exactly how many were waitlisted this year?
